This study explores the life of Buddhist nuns in Korea currently devoting themselves to Buddha's teachings. Becoming Buddhist nuns also called as female monastics or bhikkhuni is a free to choose but it is distinctly an extreme movement since moving from an ordinary woman with an ordinary life to an institutionalized communal religious environment is a considerable journey. The shift had less support and understanding from the monastery and society in general on the contrary their personal stories have been hidden and regarded their living as a matter of previous existence. The personal issues what they had before the leaving could have continuous effect on monastery life and moreover, encounter entirely new issues during an adjustment process. This research grew from the concerns for the motivation of becoming Buddhist nuns; issues and conflicts from the adjustment process; and other difficulties facing the in monastery life.

The aims of this research were to reveal the life history of Korean Buddhist nuns that has not previously been explored through examining their growth background and process, motivation to becoming Buddhist nuns, and looking current life carefully. In this research, I investigated the issues that Buddhist nuns were facing and its coping plans and, on that basis, tried to find solutions to the problems by bringing out the issues into open.

This study selected ten Buddhist nuns who entered the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order and became bhikkhuni aged 40s and 60s for sampling and executed 2 or 3 times in-depth interviews to investigate the experience of the participants. Interview data was retrospectively analyzed and categorized into 21 themes. The 21 categorized themes were significantly categorized into 5 themes again. This study addresses the life histories of nine participants except one who declined in the process of cross validation and the interviews were classified and restructured according to the subjects. Following conclusions were extracted from the study. First, in the study of their motivation of becoming Buddhist nuns, it appeared that there was not only conscious but also the subconscious motive, which was created during the period of growth. Remarkable was that both consciousnesses direct and indirectly had influenced to their leaving. The study also indicated that the both motives had interacted with each other and consequently caused the leaving and the motivation was very various from simple to complicated. Interesting fact was that during the growing period, the most participants were influenced from their own mothers, who suffered from the hardships of life, and thereby they decided to enter the monastery and hoped to live an independent and free life which was completely different and their mothers could not enjoy it at all. The participants had decided to enter the monastery by other various reasons: grown-up in a monastery and extended its influence in their leaving; had ardor for study; and to seeking the truth of human existence. It has been generally considered that Buddhist monks and Buddhist nuns are leaving to find enlightenment and reach the state of nirvana but the study showed that the participants in this study, on the other hand, had joined the monastery with the hope to play the lead role in their own life and live independently as a woman.

Second, the participants felt comfortable under their identity as a Buddhist nun and staying at the monastery when they had just entered. The study also showed that nevertheless, they were exhausted from lots of physical labor; their happiness in life had been promoted through praying, meditation and studying on Buddhism. One participant explained that "I was completely absorbed in my monastery life and as if I almost forgot myself." Another participant said that "I had a faith and made a deep how a thousand times everyday though I was exhausted from a physical labor."

Third, the participants were confronted by a number of difficulties shortly after their entering to the monastery; all participants and particularly encountered relationship issues in their daily life. They also had been faced with emotional problems such as anger and anxiety and besides gone through difficulties in their practicing and studying on Buddhism. In addition, the participants were suffered from a physical disease and financial difficulties in case of entering university for further study.

Fourth, the study revealed that the participants tried to find solutions for the problems that occurring from the monastery life; they had looked back on their life and reflected themselves through constant practice and meditation. They were also encouraged and got support from peers and acquaintances and aggressively handled that financial difficulties. But some participants took a position to defend themselves against the issues in the way of enduring or sidestepping and passively dealt with it. Remarkable was that three participants asked professional counseling and were helped to understand themselves and get over the problems. They made contact with the professional counseling in a various way but all were fascinated with the counseling effect. Through the counseling, they got an emotional healing and better understanding for both themselves and others. One of the participants explained that "Buddhism might be flourishing when it is grafting together with the counseling in future." Another participant said that "I enthusiastically recommended the professional counseling to other Buddhist nuns from my own experience."

Fifth, the participants had been changed and developed through their practice in the monastery. They found their meaning of life from the living what they long for; being humble through self-awareness and discernment; from the life that they were living according to the Buddha's teaching; having a good effect on others and living together with neighbors.

This study has shown following significances.
