Geomantic Consideration on the Development of Saemangeum Area

* Saemangeum development area is a wide reclaimed land reaching 40,100ha, by building a world longest seawall of 33.9km connecting coasts of Gunsan, Gimje, and Buan. So, a new land corresponding to two thirds of Seoul and 140 times of Yeoido area is being made. In the Saemangeum development area, a land of 28,300ha and a lake of 11,800ha are planned to be made and approximately more than one million people are expected to live. This is an ambitious business to create a distribution hub which industry, distribution, and sightseeing are connected in a new land.
In the development project of three regions by unit district in the Saemangeum area, Saemangeum industrial complex adjacent to Gunsan and Gimje is 18.7㎢ (5.66 million pyeong). Cars, construction machines, shipbuilding and marine industry are main businesses of it. Saemangeum tourist district near Buan area is 9.9㎢ (3 million pyeong). Hotels, condominiums, commercial facilities, and golf resorts are planned to be created in the district. Gogunsan islands district is 3.3㎢ (0.98 million pyeong), and it is an area including Gogunsan-do (island), Sinsi-do, Munyeo-do, and Seonyu-do. With tourism assets of international oceanic leisure tourism, Saemangeum seawall, and Byeonsan Peninsula National Park, the islands district is divided into the first and second Sinsi district, Muneyo district, and Seonyu district.
This paper mainly found out the district unit plan, water-stopping construction, locations of drainage gates, effect of water quality and wind direction from the view of geomantic studies according to the development of Saemangeum area. Investigating traditional worth contained in the geomantic theory from the Saemangeum area, plans fitting to the Saemangeum development area and indexes to be applied to the design were tried to be proposed. So, centered on Yanggi (for living people, not dad people) geomancy, study methods came to be processed.
Because Saemangeum project as the best national project since king Dangun [the first founder of the Gojoseon Dyansty (the most ancient Korean kingdom)] was thought to be in need of geomantic supplement, this paper was planned. Also, by analyzing and applying the Saemangeum development area to the concept of geomantic studies, from the result of the study for the purpose of helping the district unit plan of the development area be optimal locational conditions that nature and humans coexist, next suggestions came to be thrown out.
In the Saemangeum development area, flows of water were cornered into the direction of Gunsan. Industries like enterprises are vitalized. Circulation of sea currents is smooth, and locations of Sinsi and Garyeok sluice gates are good. The area is like a situation that a bird flies into the west and is targeting Asian area. Therefore, first, for geological features of the reclaimed land in the Saemangeum development area, it is thought that good soil taken from outside should be used, not with soil of the foreshore.
Second, it should not be done to divert water of Geum River into Mangyeong River. Waters only with Mangyeong River and Dongjin River do not lack. If water of Geum River is diverted, Gunsan area would be changed into an island, a lot of ecosystem disruption can be aroused. The whole water should be emitted into the direction of Byeonsan area.
Third, for the inside water quality improvement of Saemangeum Lake, by making an artificial wetland and a bank-protection wetland, ability of natural purification should be enhanced. Like operation of drainage gates considering water quality, exclusion of bottom water, and so on, it is necessary to control the hydraulic water circulation structure.
Forth, by making the direction of buildings in the Saemangeum area go down the wind, it is good that Gunsan area looks toward the southeast, Gimje area heads for the west or northwest, and Buan and Byeonsan area face the north. In the part of the northwest which is a low ground, high buildings should be constructed. As an aid, it is thought to be wise to create big trees strong against the wind along the Saemangeum seawall.
Fifth, about Gunsan development area, according to the geomantic theory, Hamra Mountain as a main mountain is like a great straight-line warehouse, and the geographical feature flows and spreads from the direction of the northwest to the north. And, a saint can be born and wealth can be created in this area. Therefore, it is considered to be proper to make an industrial complex related with wealth.
Sixth, about Gimje development area, the topography of the southeast direction specially erects the great wood-nature Moak Mountain, and the mountain continuously spreads into the east-south direction. Then, the geographical feature spreads into northwest and then flows into the Mangyeong plain in the west. The wood-nature symbolizes learning and liberal arts. So, because it means education or administration, it is thought to be good to create education and administration facilities in Gimje area.
Seventh, about Buan development area, since Byeonsan area was started from the south, it is proper to a multifunctional administrative city and symbolizes power. As the left energy and direction energy are the best, it is nice to build something with the north direction. In Byeonsan as an administrative city, Byeon Mountain as a main mountain is a shape with water nature and comes from the south. And then, it is linked with Saemangeum and becomes a water path. Hence, it is considered that to make a general hospital, tourist industry, and art industry is desirable.
Like these, applying to the geomantic theory, by developing the Saemangeum area eco-friendly, water-friendly, and harmonious, East Asian centric (hub) airport, optimal area of a central harbor, and distribution hub which is connected with industries, distribution, and tourism should be created in this area. Plus, with the vision of an economical center city in the East Asia and a leap into a future growth engine, together with the
construction of an advance base as a world free economic zone, ultimately, the area should be grown and developed into a world central city.
