?Donguibogam? is our precious heritage listed as UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in 2009. Also, novels have been written and films and dramas have been broadcasted with the theme of this book so even those who did not major in Oriental medicine know its true value and each family has the book and it is introduced in detail over the Internet.
When Heo Jun who lived in the Joseon Dynasty completed this book in 1610(2nd year under the reign of Gwanghagun), the king issued a royal command to the Medical Center to publish it widely. The contents of this book are divided into 5 divisions and subdivisions of ?Naegyeongpyeon?, ?Wehyungpyeon?, ?Japbyoungpyeon?, ?Tangaekpyeon? and ?Chimgupyeon?. There are a total of 25 volumes and 25 books. In CheongiUngi of ?Donguibogam? ?Japbyoungpyeon?, there are the contents that one should know Yin-Yang and the Five Elements and Ounyukgi and a doctor should know Ungi of heaven and earth and it can be seen that ?Medicine? and ?Yeok? are originated from the same source in Eastern Medicine.
In this paper, we examined facial palsy belonging to ?Japbyoungpyeon? Pung Chapter among these five chapters. Pung Chapter mentions stroke and says that facial palsy is caused when wind invades blood vessels and spirit is startled and attracts wind. And it explains that facial muscles are related to the meridian of the stomach and small intestine because they passes through the meridian of the stomach and the meridian of the small intestine. Facial palsy occurs about 30 people out of 100,000 people a year and cases of not knowing the reason for it are the most common, more than 90%. According to data from Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, hospitalization rate of patients with facial palsy out of Chinese medicine hospital inpatients increased from 1.4% in 2002 to 4.8% in 2008.
The symptoms of this disease are that one of the eyes is hardly closed or the mouth and the half of the face are paralyzed and turned to the other side and this disease can be said to occur evenly in all ages from young adults and middle-aged people to the elderly.
In Oriental Medicine, facial palsy refers to a disease that when one side of the face is paralyzed, the mouth is crooked and the eyes are not closed and its first name appears in ?Huangdineijing? ?Youngchupyeon?. It had been called as Guwa, Gubyeok or several different names and was called as facial palsy at last. Facial palsy appears in 31 kinds of literature.
In Western medicine, facial palsy is referred to as facial paralysis. Facial palsy that is, facial paralysis may result from virus theory, vascular ischemia, heredity etc. and swelling is caused in the facial nerve due to these causes etc. This, in turn, induces contraction of the blood vessels and ischemia, causing temporary paralysis. Most of this temporary nerve paralysis slowly begins to be healed within 3-7 days and is completely healed within 1-2 months but if swelling and pressure of nerves continue, it causes irreversible denaturation, leaving lasting sequelae.
According to ?Donguibogam?, the cause of facial palsy is that wind invades blood vessels and the spirit is startled in the state where there is still enough spirit and attracts wind.
As for treatment methods, Western medicine selects treatment methods at the level of nerve edema reduction, blood supply and muscle relaxation and Oriental medicine proposed eight prescriptions including rubbing philtrum or pulling out a hair on the top of the head and cauterizing face and under the ear. The names of the prescriptions are Chengyantang, Iingyoseungmatang, Bulhwangeumdan, Gyunjeongsan, Ligigeopungsan, Cheongdamsungitang, Seogakseungmatang and Cheonseongo. Among them, Bulhwangeumdan is taken as pills and attached to the face. Also, Cheonseongo was said to be made as a patch and attached. It was also said that if the mouth and eyes are crooked, it is better to acupuncture Cheonghoe?Hyeopgeo?Jichang spots and another method is to cauterize a hollow place in front of the left ear if the right is crooked and to cauterize a hollow place in front of the right ear if the left is crooked and the disease is cured soon if fourteen pieces are cauterized, respectively.
Recently, treatment methods are selected at the level of removing wind from blood vessels and releasing muscle paralysis while comprehensively examining related meridian and metacarpus and at the same time, methods such as acupuncture, medication, physical therapy etc. are combined. And in this study, it turned out that if facial palsy occurs, acupuncture is urgently required above all and among pharmacological treatments, Ligigeopungsan prescription may be used the most commonly for the public and Bangpung is the most important herb among 48 kinds of herbs.
