This study investigated that spirituality and ego-resilience has mediating effect between perceived stress and suicidal ideation which was identified as a representative source of suicide in order to discolse protective factor of suicide based on the Williams model and the theory of Lazarus. To achieve this, this study is to also examine the mediated effect of spirituality and ego-resilience and verify the structural correlation in the relationship between perceived stress and suicidal ideation
A self-reporting survey targeting university students was conducted and a total of 264 data were used to analyze the final result as follows. First, suicidal ideation, the correlation between variables and the relative influence were examined through technical statistics, correlation. Second, goodness of fit of the measurement model was evaluated. Also, setup the model for perceived stress, suicidal ideation, spirituality and ego-resilience, and use structure equation modeling ( with AMOS) to verify spirituality and ego-resilience as meditators of the relation between perceived stress and suicidal ideation.
The result of this study is as follows. First, it is identified that perceived stress, spirituality and ego-resilience are significantly correlated with suicidal ideation. Second, it is identified that the research model including the direct path between spirituality and ego-resilience is more appropriate. Third, mediated effect of spirituality is significant but mediated effect of ego-resilience is not significant and that all paths inclouded in the final model are significant except perceived stress and the direct path of ego-resilience, ego-resilience and the direct path of suicidal ideation.
This study proposed that spirituality and ego-resilience is a important resource for therapy and prevention of problem on suicidal ideation of university students exposed to various situation of stress. Limitation and future research orientations were also discussed.
