A Study on Usage and Perception of Children’s Electronic Book at Home

The Purpose of this study is to offer the basic data for young children to use Electronic Book properly at home, researching the practical use status of Children’s Electronic Book at home and finding the influence of the parents to their children for that.

For this purpose, the following research questions were set:
1. How do use of children’s electronic book at home?
2. What is the difference of the children’s electronic book usage according to parents’ age and working type?
3. What is the difference of the children’s electronic book usage according to parents’ electronic book usage and perception?

The participants in this study were 150 people of parents who have children that are 3~5 years old, going to kindergarten or nursery in Seoul and Gyunggi-do. The Survey tool was consisted of the children’s electronic book usage and perception, parents’ electronic book usage and perception, parents and young children’s background. The questionnaires were adopted from study on survey of reading and electronic media. The data was analyzed with a SPSS program, and Frequency and percentages was calculated to children’s electronic book usage. χ², one-way
ANOVA and Scheffe test was used to find out the difference of the children’s electronic book usage according to parents age, working type, electronic book usage and perception.

The conclusion of this study is summarized as follow.
Firstly, Using children’s electronic book in the home was
investigated. As a result, there are 15.3% of children who use only children e-book at home, 30.7% of children who used both a paper picture book and an children's e-book at home, which means 69% out of all children used an electronic book. Children's e-book was used by 5 years old mostly. And a lot of girls used children's e-book. Many children used E-book daily and they used it for the first time when they are 2~3 years old. The amount of reading had not been changed before and after using children’s
e-book. And they used e-book through desktop and laptop. Many children used the children's e-book with their parents and Many children’s favorite book type was a paper picture book. also many parents thought children’s e-book usage was not influenced to children’s reading habits and development. And many parents was satisfied with contents/quality of an children’s e-book.
Secondly, The difference of the children’s electronic book usage according to parents’ age and working type was investigated. As a result, it showed there was a difference for children to use an electronic book, the reading habit and developed level of children by parental factor. Also there was a difference of the number of times in using an Children’s e-book and of the person who used with children together.
Thirdly, The difference of the children’s electronic book usage according to parents’ electronic book usage and perception was investigated. As a result, the use of an Children’s e-book was influenced by the first time for children to use an electronic book, the favourite type and the effect of the reading habit and developed level. It showed that there was a difference of the use of an electronic for children, the usage, the effect of the reading
habit and developed level and satisfaction with the contents/quality of an Children’s e-book by the used of an electronic book for parents.
This study is to suggest the basic data for young children to use Electronic Book effectively at home, telling the practical use status of Children’s Electronic Book at home and important the influence of the parents to their children for that.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

가정에서의 유아 전자 그림책 사용 실태 및 인식 조사

본 연구는 가정에서의 유아의 전자 그림책 사용 실태에 대하여 조사하고 부모의 연령과 취업형태, 전자책 사용 및 인식에 따라 유아의 전자 전자책 사용에 어떠한 차이가 있는지 알아봄으로써, 유아가 가정에서 전자 그림책을 발달에 적합하게 사용할 수 있도록 기초자료를 제공하고자 하였다.

이를 위해 구체적으로 설정한 연구문제는 다음과 같다.
연구문제 1. 가정에서의 유아 전자 그림책 사용 실태는 어떠한가?
연구문제 2. 부모 연령과 취업형태에 따라 유아의 전자 그림책 사용에 차이가 있는가?
연구문제 3. 부모의 전자책 사용 및 인식에 따라 유아의 전자 그림책 사용에 차이가 있는가?

본 연구의 대상은 서울 및 경기도에 위치한 유치원·어린이집에 재원 중인 만 3~5세 유아의 부모 150명이다. 연구에 사용된 도구는 부모와 유아의 일반 배경에 대한 문항, 부모의 전자책 사용 및 인식에 대한 문항, 유아의 전자 그림책 사용 및 인식에 대한 문항으로 구성된 설문지로, 전자 매체 및 미디어에 관한 설문지와 독서실태 조사서를 근거로 본 연구의 목적에 맞게 제작하여 사용하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS WIN 21 프로그램으로 처리하여 연구대상의 유아 전자 그림책 사용 실태에 대하여 빈도와 백분율을 산출하고, 부모의 연령과 취업형태, 부모 전자책 사용 현황 및 인식에 따라 유아의 전자 그림책 사용에 차이가 있는지 χ²과 일원변량분석(ANOVA)을 실시하였다.

본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 가정에서 전자 그림책만 사용하는 유아는 15.3%, 종이책과 전자 그림책을 모두 읽는 유아는 30.7%로, 전체 유아 중 전자 그림책을 사용하는 유아는 69%로 나타났다. 연령과 성별에 따라 자세하게 살펴보면, 전자 그림책을 사용하는 유아의 연령은 만 5세가 가장 많이 나타났으며, 유아의 성별은 여아가 가장 많이 나타났다. 전자 그림책은 매일 사용하는 경우가 가장 많았고, 처음 사용한 시기는 만 2~3세가 가장 많이 나타났다. 사용 장소는 집에서 사용하는 경우가 가장 많았고, 유아 전자 그림책 사용 전·후 독서량에는 변함이 없었다는 응답이 가장 많이 나타났다. 이용하는 전자 매체는 데스크톱·컴퓨터를 이용하는 경우가 가장 많았고, 부모와 함께 사용하는 경우가 가장 많이 나타났다. 사용 계기는 아이가 찾아서 사용하는 경우가 가장 많았으며, 유아가 선호하는 동화 형태는 종이 그림책이라는 응답이
가장 많이 나타났다. 유아 전자 그림책이 유아의 독서 습관 및 발달에 미치는 영향에 대한 인식에서는 보통이라는 응답이 가장 많았고, 유아 전자 그림책 만족도에서는 전자 그림책의 사용(구입/대출)편리성에 대한 만족도가 가장 높게 나타났다.
둘째, 유아의 전자 그림책 사용이 부모 변인(연령, 취업형태)에 따라 차이가 있는지 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 부모의 연령에 따라서는 유아 전자 그림책 사용 여부, 유아의 독서 습관 및 발달에 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 부모의 취업형태에 따라서는 전자 그림책 사용 횟수, 전자 그림책 함께 사용 하는 사람에 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다.
셋째, 유아의 전자 그림책 사용이 부모의 전자책 사용 및 인식에 따라 차이가 있는지 살펴보았다. 부모의 전자책 사용은 전자책 사용 여부, 사용 횟수로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 부모의 전자책 사용 여부에 따라서는 전자 그림책 처음 사용한 시기, 선호 동화 형태, 전자 그림책이 유아 독서 습관 및 발달에 미치는 영향에 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 부모의 전자책 사용 횟수에 따라서는 유아의 전자 그림책 사용 여부, 전자 그림책 사용 횟수, 전자 그림책이 유아 독서 습관 및 발달에 미치는 영향, 전자 그림책의 내용/품질에 대한 만족도에 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다.
본 연구는 가정에서의 유아 전자 그림책 사용 실태 및 인식을 조사함으로써, 유아가 전자 그림책을 효과적으로 사용할 수 있도록 기초자료를 제공하고, 가정에서의 부모 역할이 중요함을 시사한다.
