This study aims to examine how Anger Experience Scope and Anger Response Strategy affect Anger Control Ability and Aggression of adolescents. Especially, this study tries to help school and youth related organization to understand adolescents' anger because it can make healthier development of adolescents, give theoretical background to mental health education and be a help to find individualized anger response strategy.
For fulfilling this purpose, this study sets following questions.
First, what scope do adolescents experience anger?
Second, what strategy do adolescents response to anger?
Third, how anger experience scope and anger response strategy, anger control ability and aggression are different in gender and school grades?
Fourth, how anger response strategy, anger control ability and aggression are related to anger experience scope?
Fifth, What effect does anger response strategy based on anger experience scope have on anger control ability?
Sixth, what effect does anger response strategy based on anger experience scope have on aggression?
To solve above-mentioned questions, this study investigated 961 students consist of 467 middle school students(include 172 male students and 295 female students) and 494 high school students (include 235 male students and 259 female students).
Methods for this study are based on scales of anger triggering situation by Chae Yugyeong, Korean version of anger reaction inventory(State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory, STAXI ),originally developed by Spielberger, Krasner & Solomon, by Jeon Gyeomgu and Han Deokung.
anger management inventory translated into Korean by Namgung Huiseung and Aggression questionnaire, developed by Buss and Perry, translated into Korean by Kwon Seokman are also used.
Then, the collected data are examined through factor analysis, analysis of variance, correlation analysis and regression analysis by using SPSS 21.0.
The main conclusion of this study are as follows:
First, Anger Experience Scope consist of 4 factors, which is 'exposure to violence,' 'time delay,' 'academic stress' and 'academic interference‘.
Thus, in order to generally understand adolescents' anger and develop anger response strategy and mental health education for adolescents to healthily respond to anger, we need to know adolescents' anger emotion and consider anger experience.
Second, factor analysis shows that Anger Response Strategy is affected by 3 subelement, which are 'Emotional Response(Anger Expression),' 'Behavioral Avoidance(Anger Suppression)' and 'Regulative Response(Control anger)'.
This result shows that Control Anger is important factor in adolescents because it plays a pivotal role in social development and formation of peer relationships. Thus, in order for adolescents to adaptively manage anger, Regulative Anger Response Strategy is needed.
Third, 4 scopes of anger, ‘exposure to violence’, ‘time delay’, ‘academic stress’ and ‘academic interference’, show significant difference. Therefore, we need to consider gender and school grades when making a curriculum for mental health, developing education program, counseling and etc.
Fourth, Anger Experience Scope, Anger Response, Anger Control Ability and Aggression show significant difference in 4 scopes which are ‘exposure to violence’, ‘time delay’, ‘academic stress’ and ‘academic interference’. This result indicates that we need organized instruction on improving anger control ability when making a mental health education in school curriculum.
Fifth, Anger Experience and Effects of Anger Response on Anger Control Ability show significant difference in 3 scopes. In other words, when Anger Control Ability improves, it leads to Regulative Anger Response which in turn helps to make peer relationships. Therefore, we need more education on improving Anger Control Ability.
This study tries to investigate how Anger Experience, Anger Response, Anger Control ability, Aggression are different in gender and school grades. And result can be a suggestion to understand adolescents' anger when making a curriculum, developing program, guidance and counseling.
In short, result of this study shows that we need institutional support for schools to make mental health education and need to develop various programs. Therefore, this study can be used as a basic data for verifying effectiveness of mental health education, making Anger Control programs and understanding adolescents' anger and problems.
