This study aims to interpret Chusa Kim Jeonghui’s Korean letters according to the writer’s decoding methodology. The Korean letters were decoded and interpreted in modern language, the Chusa letter form and character of language expression was analyzed, and the daily life of Chusa and the life of the time mentioned in the letters were observed. This study also proposes a possibility as to how Chusa Korean letters can be applied in various fields in the future.
The 40 Korean letters were sent from his father’s post and place of exile to his wife and his a daughter-in-law living far away. Chusa’s Korean letters of are written in a complete cursive manuscript of unusual and indeterminate form among the writing styles of the Joseon period. There is difficulty in decoding as the writing is uncertain and some characters are written incorrectly. Scholars have decoded it in the past, but there are quite a few examples of interpretations that differ from this study, especially in the medial ‘ㆍ’, ‘ㄴ’, ‘ㅇ’, and ‘ㅗ’. This study newly decodes over 280 letters.
Chusa’s Korean letters use a number of title words over 280 times. For expression, Chusa uses only ‘을’ for the accusative case marker and frequently uses ‘-ㅎㆍㅇㆍㅂ’, which is an abbreviation of the final ending. Declarative sentences and interrogative sentences have been mixed in their final endings of ‘-ㅎㆍㅇㆍㅂ, - ᄉᆞᆸ, -ᄋᆞᆸ’, and many words have been used in repetition.
In order to determine the content of Chusa’s Korean letters from the aspect of life cycle, this study review the letters by dividing them into the daily activities of eating and living, and aims to live like a true person. Daily activity involving clothes, fabrics, food, residence, housework, etc. and basic living including Korean rites of passage, illness and treatment, education, and the like, vividly exemplify the life of a nobleman.
Chusa’s letters were written between 1818 and 1844, over a course of 27 years and supplements published data which is primarily Korean annotations of Chinese classics. The vivid lifestyle of the period is reflected in the letters, making them valuable in studying many fields including language, literature, lifestyle, calligraphy, folklore, society, Oriental medicine, and more.
On a final note, cooperative interdisciplinary studies need to be promoted between Korean literature and linguistics, Chinese literature, calligraphy, paleography, history, folklore, apparel studies, food sciences, Oriental medicine, and the like in order to reduce misinterpretations in the Korean letters.
