This study aims to verify the effects of gambling motive and self-control on gambling behavior in college students, and to accomplish this purpose, the following research questions were established.
First, What are the relationships among gambling motive, self-control and gambling behavior?
Second, How do gambling motive and self-control affect gambling behavior?
Third, What are gambling motive, self-control and gambling behavior depending on gender?
In order to solve the questions of the research above, a survey was conducted on 520 students enrolled in four colleges located in Jeju Special Self-governing Province. Gambling motivation and self-control were established as the causes that affect gambling behavior of college students. Gambling motivation consists of excitement, sociality, avoidance, money and amusement. And self-control consists of impulsiveness, accomplishing of assignment, selfishness and temper of being angry.
The followings are the measurement tools used in this research. The first is the measurement of gambling motivation, which was developed by Lee Heungpyo(2002) and consists of a total of 42 questions of five factors.
The second is the measurement of self-control, which was referred to the scales of Gottfredson and Hirschi(1990), Grasmick, etc.(1993) and Jeonghyeseung(1995), and reconstructed into a total of 28 questions of four factors that were adjusted to our circumstances.
The third is the measurement gambling behavior, which is CPGI that was developed to investigate the prevalence of gambling addiction of the general public in Canada by Ferris and Wynne(2001) and adjusted properly into nine questions by Kimgyohun(2010).
Pearson's correlation analysis, single regression analysis, multiple regression analysis, independent t-test, chi-square test and analysis of frequency were conducted on the collected data by using Windows SPSS 18.0 program.
The results of this study are the followings.
First, Among the gambling motivation, self-control and gambling behavior there was a significant correlation. Gambling motivation had a parallel correlation with gambling behavior but self control had an opposite correlation with gambling behavior. This suggests that the stronger gambling motivation is, the more intensive gambling behavior is and the stronger self control is, the less intensive gambling behavior is.
Second, gambling motivation appeared to have parallel effect on gambling behavior but self control opposite one both under the level of significance. The subordinate cause of self control that affects gambling behavior seemed to be selfishness. This suggests that need in money and selfish mind can be the causes of the problems of gambling behavior.
Third, there was no gap in the gambling motivation between male and female students except excitement. Male students seemed to have more excitement motivation, which suggests that male students have more motivation to the experience of emotional stimulation such as excitement. As for self control, male students seemed to control impulsiveness and temper of being angry better than female students. However, male students were more serious in the level of gambling behavior and gambling itself than female students. It appeared that male students were four times higher in the level of very dangerous and problematic gambling than female students. So it is expected that other causes beside gambling motivation and self control affect gambling behavior of college students.
In the result of the research above, it can be known that there are differences in gambling motivation, self control and gambling behavior depending on gender and male students are more exposed to the danger of gambling than female students. Moreover, it is confirmed that the stronger gambling motivation is , the higher the severity of gambling behavior is but the stronger self control is , the lower the severity of gambling behavior is. It is difficult to block curiosity for gambling of college students artificially. According to the result of the research, in order to lower the severity of gambling, accurate understanding of gambling motivation and gambling addiction, systematic and concrete prevention, and concern for development of curing program are needed.
