As Korea’s economic growth was originally based on manufacturing, it should rapidly correspond to changes and actively develop cooperation strategies. To secure the competitive advantage of SMEs, the cooperation between SMEs is essential as the polarization of wealth between SMEs and conglomerates is deepening. In order to make up for their functional deficiencies, SMEs often aim at joint research and co-development which are extremely difficult for them to carry out alone. In R&D of future- oriented new products and growth products, alliance companies often aim at product development or entering new markets by combining each company’s technologies.
They concentrate their management resources on core capabilities, strengthen their competitiveness while as a measure for survival, SMEs have increased risks actively introduce practical cooperation and alliance strategy towards concrete performances. Thus, at the stage prior to strategic alliance, they should have a clear aim of participation and a solid intent of cooperation by their chief executive officers. At the enterprise level, the intent of cooperation can be understood as a mechanism to enhance
performances by promoting the strategy through the joint investment of resources.
As a theoretical background related to the alliance between SMEs, based on transaction cost theory, resource-based theory and learning theory, the relationship between organizational capability and intent of cooperation, the impacts of organizational capability on alliance performance and the relationship between the intent of cooperation and alliance performance were verified.
This study carried out an analysis on the impacts of SMEs’ organizational capability, that is, the impact of marketing capability and technological capability on the intent of cooperation and alliance performances for
manufacturing-based companies with experiences on SMEs alliance.
The conceptual formation of this study is as follows: First, marketing capability is a capability to grasp knowledge and information necessary for exploration of the target of proper alliance and make smooth sales and distribution. Second, technological capability is a capability to maintain an enterprise’s sustainable competitive advantage. Third, intent of cooperation is a future-oriented will to maintain the mutual cooperative relations between alliance companies in spite of unexpected problems that may occur in the process of the alliance. Fourth, financial performances were defined as the degree of improvement by strategic alliance and fifth,
non-financial performances were defined as the status of achievement of the goals of alliance by strategic alliance.
For the main theories of the conclusion of strategic alliance and the results of empirical studies on performance decision factors in various fields, based on the results of a comprehensive analysis, research hypotheses that can be introduced in the future empirical studies were
proposed: SME’ organizational capabilities, that is, marketing capability and technological capability will have positive (+) impacts on intent of cooperation. SMEs’ organizational capabilities (marketing capability and technological capability) will have positive (+) impacts on the financial and non-financial performances of strategic alliance. SME’ intent of
cooperation will have positive (+) impacts on the financial and non-financial performances of strategic alliance.
For the actual investigation of the hypotheses of this study, research has been carried out for 30 days from April 1, 2013 to April 30, 2013, and a total of 134 copies were used for an analysis. With the collected data, the relationships of influence of independent variables on dependent variables were analyzed by proposing path coefficients by structural equation using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) Ver. 19.0 statistical package program and AMOS 7.0.
The results of the actual analysis are as follows: First, technological capability has a positive impact on intent of cooperation and alliance performances. In contrast, marketing capability does not have a significant impact on the intent of cooperation and alliance performance. Second, the intent of cooperation has a significant impact on alliance performance.
The results of this study demonstrated that manufacturing-based SMEs’ marketing capability does not have a significant impact on the intent of cooperation and alliance performance. The study shows that in manufacturing-based companies, technological capability rather than
marketing capability are likely to be an important criterion for the intent of cooperation and alliance performance. Thus, it suggests that for manufacturing-based SMEs, technological capability rather than marketing capability could act as a criterion for a cooperation partner. If this study
had inquired into the small and medium sized service firms, it is possible to have produced different results. In other words, the results of this
study only apply to certain sectors of business.
This study is significant in that it systematically organized the existing determinants of alliance performance from a
