This study is to determine the effect of appearance interests and appearance management behavior on aesthetic plastic surgery. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 300 women aged 20 or older living in Seoul and Gyeonggi, and statistical analysis was performed.
A factor analysis classified appearance interest and appearance management behavior evaluation items into the three following categories: ‘appearance management interests,’ ‘appearance management attitude’ and ‘appearance management behavior.’ Among them, ‘appearance management attitude’ earned the highest scores with 4.03±0.57, followed by ‘appearance interests (3.91±0.55)’ and ‘appearance management behavior (3.00±0.54).’
According to analysis of the difference in sub factors between appearance interests and appearance management behavior by general characteristic, ‘appearance management interests,’ ‘appearance management attitude’ and ‘appearance management behavior’ were the highest among the group aged 40-50 and the lowest among the group aged 50 or older. In terms of educational background, ‘graduate school’ was the highest while ‘high school’ was the lowest. In terms of marital status, in addition, ‘appearance management interests,’ ‘appearance management attitude’ and ‘appearance management behavior’ were all greater in married people than in singles. In terms of occupation, ‘self-employed’ was the highest while ‘housewives’ were the lowest. These increased as monthly household income increased.
When asked if they had had received aesthetic plastic surgery before, 74.0% (222 respondents) said ‘YES’ while 26.0% (78 people) said ‘NO.’ When asked if they want to receive surgical treatment, 54.7% (164 respondents) said ‘YES’ while 45.3% (136 people) responded ‘NO.’
In terms of the experience of aesthetic plastic surgery by general characteristics, it was high in those aged 40-50, with a high educational background, the married, office workers and high monthly household income (KRW 5 million or more). In terms of willingness to receive aesthetic plastic surgery by general characteristics, in addition, it was also high in those aged 40-50, with high educational background, the married, self-employed and high monthly household income (KRW 5 million or more)
According to analysis of the characteristics of the experience of aesthetic plastic surgery, 45.0% (100 respondents) said that they had had surgical treatment just once. When asked why they had the surgery, 40.1% (89 people) responded ‘lack of confidence in my appearance.’ When asked who recommended the surgery, 53.6% (119 respondents) said, ‘I decided.’ When asked who pays the bill, 36.6% (80 people) responded, ‘my boyfriend or spouse.’ When asked what was considered most in selecting the surgery, 36.5% (81 respondents) responded ‘doctor’s (hospital’s) reputation.’ When asked if they were willing to receive additional plastic surgical treatment, more than half (55.4%, 123 people) said, ‘YES.’
When asked which body part they received aesthetic plastic surgery for, ‘eyes’ were the highest (117 people, 28.6%), followed by removal of freckles and spots, nose and peeling.
When asked if they plan to undergo aesthetic plastic surgery among those who haven’t had any plastic surgery before, 52.6% (41 people) said ‘YES.’ When asked why they were willing to undergo cosmetic surgery among the 41 people, ‘lack of confidence in my appearance’ was most reported, followed by ‘removal of personal problems such as scars’ and ‘to get an opportunity to have a better social life (at work).’
In terms of perception of aesthetic plastic surgery, 64.3% (193 respondents) was positive, and 7.7% (23 people) was very positive; ‘positive’ was reported by 71.0% in total. In terms of perception of aesthetic plastic surgery by general characteristics, more than 50% of respondents were positive and very positive regardless of age, education, marital status, occupation and monthly household income.
In terms of appearance interests and appearance management behavior depending on the experience of aesthetic plastic surgery, both appearance interests and appearance management behavior were greater in those who had had received surgical treatment before than in those who hadn’t had surgery yet. In addition, they were also greater in those who willing to undergo surgery than in those who were not.
As mentioned above, most women are very interested in cosmetic surgery with a positive perspective. In addition, as appearance interests and appearance management behavior were high, interest in aesthetic plastic surgery was high as well. I seems likely that the perception of cosmetic surgery is closely related to appearance interests and appearance management behavior. It is expected that the result of this study could be used as basic data for appearance interests and appearance management and establishment of a positive perception of aesthetic plastic surgery through appearance interests and appearance management behavior.
