In this thesis, I explicate the question of subject in Jean-Luc Marion and Paul Ricoeur’s philosophy. To achieve this task, I draw a topographic map of philosophies of subjectivity. After the 20th century, streams of the philosophy of subjectivity were positioned primarily between antihumanism and posthumanism. Antihumanism posited that traditional concept of human should be reduced or demolished. Posthumanism aimed to establish a new concept of ‘human nature’ based on human-technology connections. In other words, it is a reinforcement of human power. The concepts of human nature do not acknowledge traditional personhood, and instead focus on inhuman conditions. Marion and Ricoeur’s position is clearly distinguished from lines of thoughts. Their philosophy does not attempt to eliminate humanity, rather attempts to show their philosophical project to present other humanity. In this paper, I propose that their subjectivities of subject should be the self as witness.
The main idea is explored as follows: I examine Marion's the question of the subject. To do this, we will search for his phenomenology of givenness, because it is through this moment that Marion's self as witness make an appearance. Marion criticised Husserl and Heidegger, asserting that they had been reducing givenness to I or Being. In this case, on one hand, it reduces the given to objectivity (Husserl), and on the other hand, phenomenon determined through only the horizon of Being (Heidegger). Next, I explain the what is the Marion’s givenness/given. Marion argues that the phenomenon of the given generated through pure givenness. Here, it is not reduced to other factors (I, Being, God, etc.). Marion’s reduction to pure givenness led to the saturated phenomenon. If the givenness as a phenomenon is not reduced in any manners, this is because saturation by the excess of intuition over the concept or signification. That is to say, Marion stated that a saturated phenomenon is one in which what is given to intuition exceeds the intentionality. In this way, the saturated phenomenon is not reduced to I or Being.
Therefore, Marion's self is the receiver of the givenness/given as a saturated phenomenon. It appears to the one who comes after the modern subject to the moment that pure givenness is possible. Basically, He explicate his own concept of self by four names: (1) the interlocuted (l'interloqué); (2) receiver (attributaire); (3) the gifted (adonné) and (4) witness (témoin). Mariond‘s self have concrete character. First, he or she is embarrassed by the appearance of the saturated phenomenon. Second, he or she cannot apprehend the phenomenon, but receive it simply. Next, the receiver manifested the phenomenon through its own response. In this way, his or her main performance is response. The self is devoted to this task. In conclusion, the term that can express all of these processes is the witness. The witness is the worker of truth that does not escape but ceaselessly watches the phenomenon or event.
But Marion’s philosophy include philosophical aporia. Witness do not remain receiver but reach the interpreter regarding phenomenon. Through this problem, we reach the moment that can extend Marion’s concept of witness.
We find the extension of witness from Paul Ricoeur. Ricoeur argued that the self in ‘hermeneutics of self’ was a method of questioning subject embodied as attestation. For Ricoeur, attestation is interchangeable with testimony. Attestation or testimony can be defined as the assurance of being oneself acting and suffering with others in social relationships. In this way, Ricoeur’s ‘self’ is in attestation and testimony. Yet, self can not be defined directly. It is being that is attested by events, history, cultural expressions, and symbols. Here, to understand process of self-attestation, (1) We examine Ricoeur’s critique of cogito. (2) We understand the process by which his question of subject is changed. (3) We explicate Ricoeur’s self as witness. For him, self as witness was the one who speaks, and act in events that can constitute as a narrative. That is to say, ‘He’ or ‘She’ is watching, listening, narrating and acting in events. On the one hand, the self witnesses its speech and actions before others, and the community or history-historians etc. On the other hand, it verifies truthfulness or sincerity of its words and acts. Through this process, self as witness perpetuates its own existence.
Finally, I illustrate important aspects of the concept of witness. Above all, we compare Marion Ricoeur's questions of the subject with Emmanuel Levinas's philosophy. Levinas's philosophy was the source Marion and Ricoeur's ideas of selfhood. In this comparative study, the concept of witness embodied and deepened. The result of this deepening is the discovery of the humanism of witness. In these three philosophers, we explore the possibility of a new concept of humanity as witness. The humanism of witness differentiated from the inhuman contents of antihumanism, and from the values and aimes of posthumanism. This concept of humanity include elements of eventness, passivity, responsibility, and the openness of the (religious/theological) absolute.
