By focusing on whether the present curriculum for immigrated children is helpful for developing and improving their Korean which is necessary for their regular school admission and their life in Korea, the research carried out the need analysis for curriculum review and design.
After reviewing Korean language curriculum of the educational institutes which is designed to help the immigrated children to transfer or enter regular school, satisfaction and need analysis of the curriculum was done. Focusing on the curriculums of "Multi-cultural Preparatory School" and "Rainbow School" which are the education services for immigrated children, need analysis of its Korean and other subject lessons was implemented by the means of survey and in-depth interview with the teachers and students.
First, as for the students' needs for the Korean lesson, hours of Korean lessons in the institutes turned out to be reasonable. On the other hand, needs for the textbook was diverse. And as for the teachers, need for the teachers with Korean nationality was higher than the expectation, but since the students' proficiency was low, need for the bilingual teachers was also high. As for the contents of curriculum, there was a high request in speaking and listening area and vocabulary improvement which is the foundation of Korean language. According to the correlation analysis of the variables, there were correlations between the difficulties the students meet in Korean lessons and the need for the textbook, and between the need for the textbook and the need for the hours of lesson. Next, the Korean language teachers' needs were that the classes to be properly organized with the students in the same proficiency level, and to schedule many hours due to the students' situation. As for the contents of the lessons, there showed a need that, after acquiring speaking skills, the lessons need to be composed of other subjects and knowledge oriented contents which are necessary for Korean culture understanding. As for the need of textbook, most teachers required the development of customized textbook.
Next, according to the need analysis of other subject lessons, since the communication and the ability of the students with the teachers were cut off because of their poor Korean, there was a need for bilingual teachers. There were correlations between the students' Korean language proficiency and the competence in other subject lessons, and between the needs for other subject lessons and difficultness of their school life. The teachers required the classes to be organized with the students in the same proficiency level for the other subject lessons. There was some needs for bilingual teachers. As for the hours, many hours were required and Korean language proficiency was required to be improved for the other subject lessons.
According to the satisfaction analysis of the students and the teachers on the curriculum, most of the students were not able to think critically and since they have lived in Korea only for a short time, they were unconditionally accepting the curriculum to improve their Korean. So students were generally satisfied with the lesson operating ways, hours of the lessons and the textbooks. On the other hand, teachers were not satisfied with the textbooks, and they indicated that there is a lot of difficulties because of the lacking of the lesson hours and with the operation of the lessons, and the teachers with low satisfaction asked for the improvement of the curriculum.
The need analysis conducted in this research is significant because it could provide improvement points for the present curriculum according to the analysis result, and help with new curriculum design. Results of the need analysis of this research might be used as a well-grounded reference for the curriculum improvement plan and curriculum development for the immigrated children.
