Abstract
Academic libraries these days are encountered various changing factors in this knowledge and information society and a new change of role is required. Users demand specified and specialized information and high level services. In such a situation, librarians need continuing education to cope with various requirements.
This study examined the continuing education programs of the National Central Library, special organizations, and the ALA in the USA. This study examined and analyzed the regular curriculum of the department of library and information science in undergraduate degree program in the ROK and postgraduate master's course in the USA. Based on the findings, we suggested new roles for librarians to tale, such as cultural planner, IT specialist, information consultant, information service specialist, final product planner and manager.
We also suggested a improvement method to improve these programs. First, a special department for Academic librarians needs to be installed. Second, it needs to select educational topics need to be selected that consider the situation of the Academic libraries. Third, systematic and standardized continuing program must be operated. Fourth, online education development is required. Fifth, evaluation of continuing education and development of program reflection activities, such as evaluations, are required.
