The purpose of this study was to investigate relations between students' basic psychological needs for physical education lessons and their academic emotions and lesson attitudes.
The study set the students of middle schools located in Seongnam City, Gyeonggi Province as the population to gather necessary data and adopted the convenience sampling method. The data of total 310 students were used in final analysis. The study employed a questionnaire as an investigation tool. Collected data were put to t-test, one-way ANOVA, post-hoc test, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis according to the research objective.
Based on those methodologies and data analysis results, the following conclusions were drawn:
First, as for differences in basic psychological needs according to the individual characteristics, the comparison results of means according to gender show that boys had higher means in relatedness, autonomy, and competence than girls. In addition, means were compared according to the subfactors of academic emotion to figure out differences in academic emotion according to the individual characteristics. Girls had higher means in anger, despair, and boredom than boys, who had higher means in pride and pleasure than girls. Girls had higher means in fear than boys, who had higher means in self-confidence than girls with statistically significant differences between them. on top of that, means were compared according to the subfactors of lesson attitude to examine differences in lesson attitude according to the individual characteristics. As a result, boys scored higher means in achievement, satisfaction, participation, confidence and concentration than girls with statistically significant differences between them.
Second, as for the effects of basic psychological needs on academic emotion, autonomy and relatedness had negative(-) effects on such negative emotions as anger, despair, and boredom. Competence had no statistically significant effects on those emotions. Autonomy, competence, and relatedness had no statistically significant impacts on fear. As for positive emotions, competence, relatedness, and autonomy had statistically significant effects on pride and self-confidence. While autonomy and related had statistically significant influences on pleasure, competence had no statistical influence son it.
Third, as for the effects of basic psychological needs on lesson attitude, competence, relatedness, and autonomy turned out to have statistically significant effects on the subfactors of lesson attitude, namely achievement, satisfaction, participation, confidence, and concentration.
Finally, as for the effects of academic emotion on lesson attitude, self-confidence, pride, and pleasure had statistically significant effects on achievement, one of the subfactors of lesson attitude, whereas fear, boredom, anger, and despair had no statistical impacts on it. Pleasure and self-confidence had statistically significant impacts on satisfaction and participation, which were negatively(-) influenced by anger and despair. Boredom, pride, and fear had no statistical impacts on satisfaction and participation. While self-confidence and pride had statistically significant effects on confidence, fear had negative(-) effects on it. Self-confidence and pleasure had statistically significant impacts on concentration, whereas anger, despair, pride, fear, and boredom had no statistical influence on it.
