This study begins from a recognition on a necessity of instructor who teaches a communication strategy for a good communication by a Vietnamese married women immigrants, and analyzes use pattern of communication strategy based on the vietnamese married women immigrants' data of spoken discourse.
The communication strategy, which is one of constituents of communication ability, is a topic actively discussed in field of second language instruction and recently begins to receive a spotlight in field of Korean language education. However, since the research based on the married women immigrants is not entirely satisfactory, this study, on the basis of year 2011, studies the Vietnamese married women immigrants, who comprise the highest rate of married and female domestic immigrant, as main subjects of the research.
This study defines communication strategy as ‘an interactive and non-interactive strategy which are used to effectively accomplish goal of communication and solve problem of communication when second language learner communicates by using object language.’ Based on this definition, the Vietnamese married women immigrants' use pattern of communication is examined in two aspects. Two aspects are aspect of interactive and aspect of non-interactive.
As a result, through this study, the Vietnamese married women immigrants' use pattern of communication strategy can be identified as follows.
First, use pattern appears differently according to type of discourse when the Vietnamese married women immigrants' communication strategy is classified into free discourse situation and task performance situation. In the case of interactive strategy, high rate of using communication strategy such as 'appeal for help, own-accuracy check, asking for repetition, repetition' is shown in both free discourse and task performance situation. However, the rate of using 'asking for confirmation' is only high in free discourse, and the rate of 'rephrase' is only high in task performance.
Also, in the case of non-interactive strategy, 'use of fillers, self-repair, mime, self-repetition' is used in free discourse and task performance. 'Use of filler' is used the most, followed by 'self-repair, mime, and self-repetition'. However, when we look in view of strategies such as ‘paraphrase, approximation, mime, self-repair, self-repetition, verbal strategy markers’ these strategies are used more in task performance than in free discourse.
This following result implies that, in daily life, the Vietnamese married women immigrants feels more need of communication strategy and uses it more in situation of task performance type than in situation of free discourse type. In the future, fact above should be considered when instruction and learning method of communication strategy for the Vietnamese married women immigrants is prepared.
Secondly, compared to the Vietnamese married women immigrants rate of using 'appeal for help, asking for repetition, and asking for confirmation' which belong to request strategy among interactive strategy, the rate of using 'asking for clarification' is remarkably low. Among four strategies which constitute request strategy, ‘asking for clarification’ is strategy which attempts the most active interaction with a communication partner.
By considering this, in the use of strategy which actively expresses their shortcoming to communication partner and asks to help for improvement of their shortcoming, the Vietnamese married women immigrants show a passive attitude. Therefore, when instruction and learning method of communication strategy for Vietnamese married women immigrants are prepared, instruction and learning method, which recommend communication strategy which uses active interaction with communication partner, should planned.
Lastly, it is confirmed that use of 'paraphrase' which is non-interactive strategy stays in an immature stage. Communication strategy is to solve communication problem and raise a quality of communication. However, in the aspect of Korean language education, a plan, which can improve capability of speaking Korean through use of communication strategy, should be discussed together. Therefore, when instruction and learning method of communication strategy for Vietnamese married women immigrants are prepared, Instruction and learning method, which focus on strategy like 'paraphrase' which can have positive impact on increase of Korean speaking ability, should be established.
By summing up the discussion up to now, this study has following meaning. First, this study has meaning for analyzing the Vietnamese married women immigrants' use pattern of communication strategy which is not fully discussed in field of Korean language education until now. Especially, the study has more value for examining use pattern of communication strategy by targeting the Vietnamese married women immigrants who are most of married women domestic immigrants.
Next, the study has value because the result of study, which observes Vietnamese married women immigrants' use pattern of communication strategy and analyzes, can be used as basic material for preparing instruction and learning method of communication strategy targeting Vietnamese married women immigrants.
This study does not control any variables other than nationality of the Vietnamese married women immigrants, and observes and analyzes use pattern of communication strategy. The study based on detailed use pattern of communication strategy targeting Vietnamese married women immigrants through control of more specific variables is expected to proceed in the future.
