The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perfectionism and academic burnout in elementary school students, and to investigate whether this relationship is mediated by the ego-resilience and stress coping behavior.
For the purpose of the study, from March 25th to April 5th, 2013, a total of 543 elementary school students in D city participated in the study. Participants completed Child and Adolescent Perfectionism Scale (CAPS), Ego-Resilience Scale, Stress Response Behavior Scale, and Korean Academic Burnout Inventory (KABI).
The major findings of the study were the following.
First of all, the perfectionism was positively correlated with academic burnout.
Second, the ego-resilience partially mediated the relationship between perfectionism and academic burnout.
Third, stress coping behavior(aggressive coping behavior, active coping behavior, and passive/evasive coping behavior) partially meditated the relationship between perfectionism and academic burnout. And except social support-seeking behavior.
Current findings suggest that ego-resilience and stress coping might play an important role in the academic burnout, and interventions targeting at increasing the ego-resilience and effective stress coping behavior might be helpful in efforts to prevent or decrease academic burnout in elementary school students.
