This study investigated the relationship between child ego resiliency and aggression according to gender difference and the effects of ego resiliency on aggression, thereby providing suggestions for positive development and prevention.
Data was collected from 325 Gangneung 5th and 6th grade boys and girls using self-administered questionnaires.
The methods used in this research involved two separate tools. Self-resilience was measured using tools developed by Eunhee Park (1996). Aggression was measured using tools developed by Sungyeon Park, which was further modified by Jiheun Kang (2004). The data were processed using the SPSS statistical program. This program was used for frequency analysis of the demographic data of examined subjects. Cronbach's alpha coefficients of reliability for each measurement tool were verified. Ego resilience and gender differences in aggression were examined by conducting a t-test and the relationships between key variables were examined using Pearson"s product-moment correlation coefficient. Finally, the effects of the factors of resilience on aggression were analyzed by multiple regression analysis.
Results from this study can be summarized as follows:
First, the resilience of children was found to be higher in girls than boys they were especially better at controlling vitality, interpersonal skills and emotions, which are all considered to be factors of resilience. In addition, the child aggression based on gender differences, was found to be higher in boys than girls. Boys scored higher inreactive aggression, relational aggression, and instigative aggression.
Second, the relationship between resilience and aggression was found. It was found that the less energetic and the lower the interpersonal skills possessed by a child, the higher the aggression level. More curious children showed higher levels of reactive aggression. Higher optimism and interpersonal skills showed correlation with high relational aggression, and lower optimism and interpersonal skills correlated with higher instigated aggression.
In terms of gender difference in the relationship between resilience and aggression, boys showed higher aggression and reactive aggression with higher emotional control, whereas girls showed no significant correlation between resilience and aggression, although more emotional control resulted in high reactive aggression in girls.
Finally, in regard to the effects of resilience on aggression, there was a difference between the two genders. Main predictors of boys’ aggression were found to be interpersonal skills, emotional control, and curiosity. When the impact of resilience on the factors of aggression was investigated, the significant variable that could predict reactive aggression was found to be interpersonal skills, emotional control and curiosity and significant predictors of relational aggression was found to be emotional control, and finally, the significant variables that could predict instigative aggression was emotional control. It was found that for the case of girls, the impact of curiosity on general aggression was more significant. This indicated that curiosity without the ability to control emotions makes children try to solve problems through verbal or physical aggression.
