This study is aimed at testing the effect of hope enhancement group counseling program on the adaptability to school life and self-esteem of high school students. I have set study questions below for the goal.
Study question 1. How is the effect of home enhancement group counseling program on adaptability of high school students to school life?
Study question 2. How is the effect of home enhancement group counseling program on self-esteem of high school students?
In order to solve the study questions above, I made process starting from selecting participants, following pretest, composing testing/control group, applying home enhancement group counseling program, post test, and ending to analysis of data.
Participants were 18 second-graders in J high school in Seogwipo-si, randomly distributed evenly to test/control groups.
For testing adaptability to school life, Moon(2002)'s self reporting test for adaptability to school life was used, extended from four-point level Likert scale(never, seldom, usually, always) to five-point level Likert scale(never, seldom, sometimes, usually, always).
Self-esteem test made by Choi&Cheon(1993) referring to Coopersmith(1967), Mcchale&Chaigheda(1988) is used to measure individual's self-esteem. It is composed of total 32 four-point Likert scaled questions, with sub factors of general, social, family, school self-esteem.
Hope enhancement group counseling program is composed from Choi(2005)'s program related to enhancement of agency and pathway thinking out of 'strategy of hope enhancement program development for school counselor' suggested by Synder&Feldman(2002) and Baek(2008)'s "hope enhancement group counseling program for elementary school students" for elementary school upper graders with less hope. The program was carried out after composing the group, from October 12th to 21st, 2011, 11 sessions in total, spending 50 minutes in each session.
SPSS WIN 18.0 was used to analyze the data, t-test to pretest score is conducted for testing the hypothesis. The pretest result confirmed that both test and control group were homogeneous, showing no significant difference between two groups.
The result for analyzing test sheet response is shown below.
First, there was significant difference between test group and control group in adaptability for school after counseling.
Second, there was significant difference between test group and control group in self-esteem after counseling.
Third, there was significant difference between test group and control group in learning adaptability(participation, learning effort, controlling learning behavior), social adaptability(friendship, rule observance), and just adaptability(school preference, school avoidance, satisfactory of school life), which are sub factors of school adaptability.
Fourth, there was significant difference between test group and control group in general, social, family self-esteem, which are sub factors of self-esteem, and no difference in self-esteem in school.
These results present that hope enhancement group counseling program affects adaptability to school life and self-esteem of high school students. It seems that the program helps students to develop and display individual's strength and virtue, enhancing quality of life and letting them think positively of their future, thus leads to improvement of adaptability to school life and self-esteem.
Therefore, it suggests that it is needed to use hope enhancement program actively in school scene.
