This study was conducted to explore the effects of the peer mentoring on the learning flow, self-directed learning, adaptation to school life, and academic achievement of middle school students. One hundred twenty eight (65 mentors and 63 mentees) of 191 students in a middle school participated in peer mentoring. Data obtained from the questionnaires to measure students' learning flow, self-directed learning, school life adjustment and academic achievement of 5 subject matters(Korean, English, Math, Social Studies, Science) were used to explore the effects of the peer mentoring. This study also utilized data obtained from observation, interviews, and journals of the participants in peer mentoring.
The main results of this study are as follows:
1. Male students who participated as mentees in peer mentoring scored significantly higher in cognitive immersion and affective commitment than male students who participated as mentors and nonparticipants in peer mentoring.
2. Students of the peer mentoring school scored significantly higher in self-directed learning than students of non-peer mentoring school.
3. Students of the peer mentoring school scored significantly higher in adaptation to study in school than students of non-peer mentoring school.
4. Students who participated as mentors or mentees in peer mentoring scored significantly higher in academic achievement than students who did not participated.
The findings of this study provide some evidence of improvements in learning flow, self-directed learning, adaptation to school life, and academic achievement of middle school students who participated in peer mentoring. Thus this study supports that peer mentorig is an effective educational approach for improving of learning ability in middle school students
