I explored the contents of job stress which child care teachers have experienced and analysed it with conceptual diagram methodology through the research. The objects of the study are 12 child care center principals and 12 chid care teachers who are working in child care centers and agreed to participate in the research, and they were selected with snowball sampling.
For the study, I followed the six process as below.
(1) planing preparation process for conceptual diagram
(2) calculating the ideas
(3) structuralize idea statements
(4) analyzing the conceptual diagram
(5) interpreting the conceptual diagram
(6) analyzing with conceptual methodology
The principals and teachers were asked with the focusing question, "What is your job stresses which you have experienced since you were employed in chid care center?" and I carried out interviews for each participants. I calculated total 1,299 idea statement from participants, which are 758 ideas from principals and 541 ideas from teachers. As the result of aggregating and editing of analysis team, the idea statements reasoned into 46 catalogs.
The summary of the research is below.
As a first, principals and teachers recognised the idea statements that shows job stress experiences as two-dimensional viewpoint. Principals and teachers recognized 46 idea statements as 'requests of parents-role conflict' level and 'overwork of child care-insufficiency of social support' level. They are focusing on role-conflict or requests of parents when they experience job stress and they define 'job stress experience' as insufficiency of social support and overwork of child care.
As the analyses results, the idea statements which got highest frequency from the participants are as follows: 'teachers go to trouble when they should combine working and housework', 'principals and teachers are both distressed when they get a negative look from community or society', 'principal and teachers experience difficulties when children in center meet with a safety accident', 'principals and teachers hard to fulfill individual desires of parents', 'teachers experience grudge when people charge off all the management of children to teachers', 'teachers get tired with individual tendency of principal', 'principals and teachers feel difficulties in preparation of appraisal certification of child care centers'.
Secondly, principals have a perception of job stress like 'difficulty of communication', 'insufficiency of social support', 'hard to fulfill individual request of parents', 'excess of request from parents', 'difficulty of teacher management', 'operational problems', 'overwork of child care'. Principals cleary recognized 'insufficiency of social support' and 'overwork of child care' as same mode.
Thirdly, teachers experience job stress as 'role-conflict', 'operation problems', 'conflict from absence of communication', 'workload besides child care', 'carelessness of self-development'. Their job stresses are focusing on workload besides child care in density of gathering. The result shows that teachers equally recognized difficulty from workload besides child care.
As the fourth, I examined difference and similarity of job stress understanding between principals and teachers. As the difference, principals recognized job stress as the focusing on insufficiency of social support, on the other hand, teachers recognized job stress as operation problems. The cause of the result might be that when principals recognize job stress as overwork, teachers recognize job stress as workload besides child care.
Above this, when principals experience difficulty of teachers management, teachers experience job stress from carelessness of self-development. And also, while teachers recognize job stress in conflict of absence of communication, principals rarely recognize job stress from it. Teachers are understanding the conflict in the absence of communication as individual level while the stress from preparation of appraisal certification and safety accident of children are understood as social level.
As the similarity of job stress recognition between principals and teachers, 'overwork of child care' and 'excess request of parent' are reasoned. Through the fact that they have in common understanding in 'overwork of child care', they are expressing difficulty as the service provider of child care program. To solve the difficulty, the institutional and systematic manpower support is desperate so that they can be committed to child care. If the institutional full time manpower support is difficult, other various solutions should be considered.
In the criticality analysis result of job stress, teachers display a higher tendency of recognizing in all six gathering than principals. We can presume that teachers might response to their problems very sensitively contrary to principal. To solve the problem, the relationship between principal and teacher should be improved and the program for alleviating teacher's stress through refresher training or retraining.
There are several significance in the research like followings. Firstly, it is meaningful to explore empirical recognition concept of job stress. Secondly, it shows subjective recognition to job stress experience study through applying conceptual diagram while there have been insufficient advanced researches. Finally, the research can be made full use as basic material when the relationship improvement and alleviation of job stress are needed.
