The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of expression activity using a movie on the improvement of children's creativity. Specifically, it aims to explore the effects of expression activity using movie on fluency, flexibility, originality, and imagination which is a measure of children's creativity.
The subjects of the study were 40 children of 5 years old attending two elementary school kindergartens located in the J area and randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group. While the experimental group(n=20) conducted expression activity after watching a movie, the control group(n=20) did not participate in expression activity after watching a movie.
The test instrument used for the study was K-CCTYC and the result was calculated based on the score sheet. For the statistical analysis of data collected, a t-test analysis was conducted using a SPSS 12.0 program.
Finally, the results of the study were summarized as follows.
First, the experiment group children who conducted expression activity using a movie showed higher total score of creativity compared with the control group children, suggesting a significant effect of expression activity using a movie on the total score of creativity. The result accorded with previous research results(Oh, 2005; Park, 2009; Yu, 2009). It also agreed with the result of M. S. Lee(2009)'s research on the effect of divergent questions using a movie that teacher's divergent questions through a movie stimulated children's curiosity, had educational effects, and improved creativity.
Second, creativity elements such as fluency, flexibility, and originality had significant effects in the experimental group children conducting expression activity using a movie. It accorded with the result of Oh(2005)'s research on the effect of class using a movie on children's creative thinking that class using a movie had effects on children's creative thinking. This result may be produced because a movie gives interests and enjoyment to children.
Third, a creativity element such as imagination did not show significant effects in the experimental group children conducting expression activity using a movie. It was not different from the results of previous researches. Andrews argued in the research on preschool children's development of creative imagination that while children of 4∼4.5 years old exerted the highest creative imagination, those of 5 years old were suddenly decreased in creativity.
Based on the results of the study, expression activity using a movie positively influenced the improvement of children's creativity. Thus, it is expected that expression activity using a movie will be actively used and applied to classroom activity to foster children's creativity in the early childhood education field and contribute to conducting further study.
