The purpose of this study is to develop the group coaching program for middle-aged housewives and to verify its effectiveness. To verify the program's effectiveness, this study examined the effects on self-esteem, subjective-wellbeing and depression as dependent variables. It also aims to verify the continuing effectiveness of self-coaching after finishing the program.
For this study, 10 middle-aged housewives who were taking an intermediate computer course at G community center located in S-Gu were sampled as an experimental group. 6 middle-aged housewives who were taking a basic computer course at the same G community center and 6 housewives who were acquaintances of the experimental group were sampled as a control group. 10 persons of the experimental group were arranged to carry out 8 sessions of the test in total (once a week/every session is 120 minutes). To verify the program's effectiveness, pre-test, post-test, the first follow-up test after 3 weeks and the second
follow-up test after 6 weeks were conducted. The second follow-up test was conducted on the experimental group only. Instruments used in this study are as follows. Self-esteem was measured with scale which was developed by Rosenberg(1969).
Subjective-wellbeing was measured with scale which was developed by Lyubomirsky and Lepper(1999) and modified by Lyubomirsky & Seligman(2002). Depression was measured with korean scale(Lee & Song, 1991) which was based on the scale developed by Zung(1970).
For analysis of collected data and verification of program's effects, Descriptive statistics, Frequency analysis, Independent sample T-Test, Mixed ANOVA and One‐way ANOVA were conducted. All these statistical analysis used SPSS for Windows Version 12.0k.
Results derived from this study were as follows.
First, the effect of group coaching program on self-esteem of middle-aged housewives in the experimental group was observed with statistically significant difference.
Second, the effect of group coaching program on subjective-wellbeing of middle-aged housewives in the experimental group was observed with statistically significant difference.
Third, the effect of group coaching program on depression of middle-aged housewives in the experimental group was observed with statistically significant difference.
Fourth, as to the continuance of self-coaching effect after the end of group coaching, a statistically significant difference was observed between the pre-test and post-test, but not between the first follow-up test, the second follow-up test and post-test. Thus, it was confirmed that the effect of self coaching continued even after the end of the program.
The meanings and implications of this study are as follows.
In terms of theoretical aspect, this study developed a group coaching program for middle-aged housewives based on theories of coaching psychology. The second, this study also analyzed the effectiveness of a group coaching program as a psychological method for enhancing the performance and applicability of
collective education. In addition, it was meaningful that this study verified the continuing effectiveness of self-coaching through pre-test, post-test and two times follow-up test based on self-coaching method.
In terms of practical aspect, this study developed an applicable program to the field which can be served as an effective group coaching foundation for middle-aged housewives through providing related processes and methods.
