The present research examined the association between the Acceptance of Cosmetic Surgery(ACS), Tajin Kyofusho(TKS; an syndrome of interpersonal fear), Appearance-based Rejection Sensitivity(appearance-RS), and Body Dysmorphic Concerns(BDC), which are related to interpersonal relationship and physical attractiveness. Extending previous research conducted among British and American university students, the causal model between appearance-RS, BDC, and ACS was tested. In addition, the association between TKS and ACS was demonstrated. The data of 405 Koreans, aged 18-29, were analyzed through Structural Equation Modeling(SEM). Consistent with the predictions based on the previous studies, Appearance-RS had directly affected BDC, and BDC did ACS, also. Yet, inconsistent with the predictions, Appearance-RS didn't directly affect ACS, rather, BDC fully mediated between Appearance-RS and ACS. In the relationship between TKS and ACS, the mediating effect of BDC was significant, as well as the mediating effect of 3 paths of passing through Appearance-RS and BDC.
The discussed issues were about the necessity of dealing with the Appearance-RS and BDC before cosmetic surgery activities and the association TKS and ACS could be explained culturally.
