The purpose of this study was to provide the base data for reducing social anxiety by investigating the level of social anxiety of university students with disabilities and inquiring into the factors that affect on social anxiety. The questionnaires were responded by the 331 university students with disabilities residing in Daegu and Cheonan. The data were obtained by self-report questionnaires. Based on the theoretical background and previous studies, the social anxiety factor, the dependent variable, was divided into social interaction anxiety and performance anxiety, and the two sub-factors are divided into self-assertive situation, interactional situation, facing stranger situation, presentation situation, and non-verbal performance situation. The inferiority feeling, emotion regulation style, college life maladjustment were selected as independent variables.
The main results of this study are as follows. First, the students with disabilities showed higher social anxiety as compared to the control group. The social anxiety of the students with disabilities was overall high, especially in interaction situation out of the other sub-factors. Second, the students with disabilities showed overall higher inferiority feeling as compared to the control group. The Domestic inferiority feeling was the highest out of the other sub-factors of inferiority feeling. Third, support-seeking style out of the sub-factors of emotion regulation style was only significantly different between the control group and the students with disabilities. This result shows how the families affect on emotion regulation of the students with disabilities. Forth, the result of comparing college life maladjustment between control group and the students with disabilities was that the individual-emotional adaptation was significantly low. The result implicates the maladjustment from individual psychological stress and acceptance of disabilities. Fifth, looking into the sub-factors that affect on social anxiety, inferiority feeling generally had a significantly correlation, and avoidant-distractive regulation style and individual-emotion control showed significant correlations. Sixth, domestic inferiority feeling, study inferiority feeling, study adjustment, individual-emotion adjustment, active style, and support-seeking style significantly affected on social anxiety.
In short, social anxiety of the students with disabilities was relatively high. Study adjustment, active style, and support-seeking style affect on social anxiety of the students with disabilities. The results revealed that the crucial factors that affect on social anxiety were domestic inferiority feeling, study inferiority feeling, and individual-emotion adjustment.
