Effect of High School Students' Psychosocial Health Status and School Adjustment

(Abstract)
In order to examine the relationship between adolescent addiction tendency and psychosocial health status, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 401 high school juniors at A vocational high school located in Daegu, Korea in October 2012.
According to the subjects' addiction tendency to smartphone, the addiction-group (32.9 points) showed higher depression than the non-addiction group (30.9 point) on the depression factor.
The distribution of smartphone addiction depending on general characteristics, the female students showed higher distribution than the male students in proportion to the amount of allowance.
Among the psychosocial health status associated with general characteristics, the female students showed higher degree of depression than the male students, and it was significantly high depending on frustrated school life, low grade and strained family atmosphere.
The male students showed higher self-esteem degree the female students, and it was significantly high in proportion to satisfied school life, high grade and harmonious family atmosphere.
Social support was significantly high in proportion to satisfied school life, high grade and harmonious family atmosphere.
The male students showed higher interpersonal relationship than the female students, and it was significantly high in proportion to high grade, good financial condition and harmonious family atmosphere.
School adjustment was significantly high in proportion to satisfied school life, high grade and harmonious family atmosphere.
The variables related to smartphone addiction were gender, allowance, interpersonal relationship and school adjustment. The smartphone addictive potential of the female students was 2.189 times higher than that of the male students in gender, and 20,000-40,000 won was 1.864 times higher than that of less than 20,000 won in allowance. The smartphone addictive potential increased 1.034 times as 1 point reduced in interpersonal relationship score and increased 0.944 time as 1 point reduced in school adjustment score.
Although adolescents are exposed to various conditions that may easily cause smartphone addition, it is the fact that preventive program and health education are insufficient. In particular, it is considered necessary to take preventive measures the tendency that smarphone addiction gets worse under the influence of depression, school grade, social support and satisfaction with school life.
