This paper focused on life and paintings of Seokeon(石然) Yang Gi-hun(楊基薰, 1843~1911) who had worked in the late 19th and early 20th century.
Yang Gi-hun was not just a court painter, but he was an actually occupational painter of noble birth from generation to generation in Pyongyang. He was also recommended to a position late in life at 49, and he started his career as a low-ranking government official. In 1905, he was promoted to Jeong-3-poom(正三品), however, he focused on drawings in several areas like Pyongyang, Seoul and Japan.
When he was at 12, he learned paintings and calligraphic works from Sobul(少芾) Lee Hui-pal(李羲八, 1796~?), and he worked in Pyongyang until he came to Seoul in 1905. He had a company with Pyongyang calligraphical painter Sonam(少南) Lee Hui-su(李喜秀, 1836~1909), and he also had a meeting with Korean and Japan government officials who visited in Pyongyang on business. He took his son Yang Yeong-jin(楊英鎭, 1881~1918) and Kin Yu-tak(金有鐸, 1875~?) as pupils to foster talented artists. Meanwhile, he was known to paint <The Album leaf of The United States(美國風俗畵帖)> after following Min Yeong-ik(閔泳翊, 1860∼1914) to the US in 1883. But this sould be considered again because it doesn’t match with his youngest son Yang Yu-jin(楊瑜鎭, 1884~?)’s birth time.
When he resigned from Chamseogwan(參書官) of Punggyeonggung(豐 慶宮) in 1905, he came to Seoul and had social intercourse with local government officials to take part in social activities. These activities were related to Seowu(西友) Society made up with Seokyeong(西京) intellectuals as a member of it. He painted <HyeolJuk(血竹)> to put on Daehanmaeilshinbo(大韓每日申報) in 1906 at Park Eun-sik(朴殷植, 1859~1925)’s request who was a founder member of Seowu Society. In 1907, he also attended promoters meeting of Gyoyuk-Seohwagwan (敎育書畵館) related to educational business with Seowu Society, and established by Kin Yu-Tak and Kin Kyu-jin(金圭鎭, 1868~1933). At that time, he presented works with Sinjagwan(臣字款) to court as a local painter exceptionally. This Sinjagwan drawing reflected the change of court paintings form of production. Thus, as a local artist, his special backgrounds and his works to a superior had important roles to represent for changed aspect of the age.
Yang Gi-hun had finished short life in Seoul for 3 years and he worked in Japan in 1908. He opened calligraphical paint exhibition. He met many people from various circles and got a prize for presenting Noando(蘆雁圖) to emperor of Meiji(明治). But he returned to Korea because of an injury in 1909.
The most famous of his drawings is NoAndo, but he also painted a lot of Baekrodo(白鷺圖) and Sagunja(四君子). He created his own form in detailed expression of paintings in Joseon Dynasty traditional style. He especially enjoyed painting maehwa(梅花) among Sagunja, and in his style, there is a affinity with Yeohang(閭巷) artists like JoHui-ryong(趙熙龍, 1789∼1866) and Yu Suk(劉淑, 1827∼1873). He drew other Sagunja in a way of Chinese art style and trend in painters at the moment. These works were connected with drawings in circulation during the period of Joseon Dynasty because of typical style and repetitive subjects for poetry. On the other hand, his pieces presented to court were drawn exquisitely or he tried to make new one, and also he borrowed old poetries or he composed a poem for the title of poetry.
Yang Gi-hun made Japhwabyung(雜畵屛) which was a big trend in late Joseon Dynasty painters with a picture of flowers and birds. His Japhwabyung made up with limited materials like Indian ink, and it was different from Seoul artists’ one. Not few works are in existence during the time because of fair demand.
His landscape paintings were not many, and these arts using different subject of poetry were considered irrelevant with drawings produced for circulation in calligraphical paintings. His landscape work was usual scenery paintings of Namjong(南宗畵) landscape style. Its transforming composition borrowed from Chinese art style and description of natural features reflected great vogue of the genre of paintings at that time. This appears in Sinjaguan drawings presented to court before, but it has novel esthetic sense with different structure, composition and colors. Through some works fell under Sokyeongsansuinmul(小景山水人物畵) we could see his art of expression in character with his weak writing in small characters.
Yang Gi-hun’s Ehaehwa(魚蟹畵) was selected as one of painting subjects in Japhwabyung mostly, and was regarded as one of painting subjects for demander needs due to production with no part of piece. He mainly drew shrimp, crab, mandarin fish, blowfish in late Joseon with traditional painting style, and he also added up his own style using Mukbeop(墨法) of Molgolbeop(沒骨法).
Through his activities and artworks, we could examine on painters aspect and new tendency. And also I hope this paper is of some help to understand local artists’ way of existence in late 19th century.
