The purpose of this study is to investigate about the developments of musicians' organizations in Korea for musicians' rights and interests based on comparison of local and overseas organization. There was a rapid development of classical musical circles in Korea. Many of young musicians got prized from the four great international music competitions such as the International Tchaikovsky Competition and the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition. However, the performance environment is still very poor for most of musicians in Korea. About 49 percent of musicians earn under 1 million won in a month. Moreover, Before enforcement of the 「Artists welfare law」 some organizations should have represented what musicians needs are, but no organization did.
In the United State, the United Kingdom and Japan, there are several organizations that represent musicians’ rights and interests for over 100 years. Therefore in this study, I would like to determine about the leading musicians’ organizations such as the American Federation of Musicians of United State and Canada, the Musicians’ Union of the United Kingdom and the Musicians' Union of Japan.
For comparison objects in local, I chose the Music Association of Korea and Korean Artist Union. There were four differences between local and overseas organizations. Based on the differences, this study presented several way to development for musicians’ organizations in Korea. This investigation recommends for follow-up study that an investigation about more musicians’ organizations in the other countries would be helpful for make more objective conclusion.
