The purpose of this study is to recognize how the children's reading interest and development is influenced by the balanced language activities focused on children's poem, and to verify the effect of educational activities based on balanced approach applicable to the field of early childhood education.
The research questions for this goal are as follows.
1. What kind of effect does the balanced language activities focused on children's poem have on 4-year old children's reading interest?
2. What kind of effect does the balanced language activities focused on children's poem have on 4-year old children's book reading development?
The subject of this study is total 40 children of 4-years old consisted of 2 classes from the 'M' kindergarten and 'H' kindergarten which are public kindergarten located in Chungrang-Gu, Seoul. Of the 40 children, 20 from 'M' kindergarten to which the balanced language activities focused on children's poem is applied, are assigned to an experimental group and the other 20 from 'H' kindergarten to which the total language activities is applied, to a control group. The experiments were conducted for 6 weeks, from 10th of September, 2012 to 19th of October, 2012, and consisted of the appreciation of 11 children's poem, which are selected by the degree of awareness among the 'our country' and 'transportation' and additional intensive and extensive activities.
The instruments used in this study are 'Primary Pupil Reading Attitude Inventory' by Askov(1973), used by Lim Wonsin(1994) in order to inspect the chindren's interest in reading, and 'The inspection tool of reading development' by Sulzvy(1985), used by Roh Sanghye(2010) in order to inspect the reading development. The tests were conducted twice, before and after, and the results were analysed with T-test.
The results of this study are summarized as follows.
First, the growth of experiment group is higher than that of control group in the children's reading interest by the balanced language acitivities focused on children's poem. but the difference does not reach the statistical meaningfulness.
Second, the growth of experiment group is higher than that of control group in the children's reading development by the balanced language acitivities focused on children's poem. And the difference reaches the statistical meaningfulness.
In conclusion, the result of this study shows that the experiment group, which adopt the balanced language activities focused on children's poem, is superior to the control group based in the total approach, in the children's reading development, but not in the children's reading interest.
