『牖蒙千字』 硏究 : 한국어독본으로서의 성격을 중심으로 = A Study on "Yumongchunja (牖蒙千字)" : Focused on the Characteristics as a Korean Reader

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

James Scarth Gale's 『Yumongchunja(牖蒙千字)』achieved his various writing experiments about a mixed style of writing Korean and Chinese character, publishing a reading text which consisted of knowledge of Western society in modern enlightenment period. In 『Yumongsokpyun(牖蒙續編)』 Gale praised Korean writing also he viewed Chinese writing in a negative light; he recognized that it was necessary to change his view regarding Chinese writing. 『Yumongsokpyun(牖蒙續編)』 was made by interest and affection to Korean classic works and should be considered Korean literature Anthology in Chinese character.
『Yumongchunja(牖蒙千字)』 is so systematical that we can't believe it was published during the modern enlightenment period. 『Yumongchunja(牖蒙千字)』 is divided into three books depending on how difficult style of writing and we can read difficult level of a mixed style of writing Korean and Chinese character gradually through this book. A dictionary of chinese character is placed in each volume's end so as to make a review easy. Also, it combines a reading text and character text properly and nothing was better than any other language reader around the same time.
Another characteristic is that it had new educational contents which wasn't discovered in traditional textbook. Educational contents consist of scientific knowledge, enlightening knowledge about alternative society, and historical figures, incidents or western stories regarding a child of the Enlightenment. In composing the body, That it embodied new contents created great results. At the same time 『Yumongchunja(牖蒙千字)』 attained learning of a mixed style of writing Korean and Chinese character, a Chinese character, a word written in Chinese Character and new knowledge.
Through this thesis I studied positive aspects of 『Yumongchunja(牖蒙千字)』 and that is my limit. In the future, it's necessary to study the textbook in with a critical eye. If you do so, we can expect the positive effects in current education system.
