We live in direct or indirect communications of numerous advertisements, from early in the morning until the moment of going to bed, in modern society, where information plays an important role as a means of generating new wealth. It is very difficult yet important to deliver the advertising messages efficiently in today's communications environment, increasingly enormous and difficult to predict.
According to this change of times, the typography of print media advertising should have visual attractiveness as well as formative characteristics with the understanding as a design element rather than a simple letter. In addition, a visual representation is required that allows consumers who see ads to be able to recognize the message of the ads immediately. These requirements have changed typography from a character as a simple means to deliver reading to something pursuing free method of expression to "read, see, and feel"; and to new means of expression helping more effective visual communication through a variety of visual thinking.
In the present study, the non-verbal typography expression in print media advertising was segmented in 7 keywords for the analysis of the characteristics. The aim of this study is to suggest effective communication method and the direction of development of nonverbal typography in print media advertising, through classification of print media advertising expressed in nonverbal typography into three types on the basis of the aforementioned analysis, combining seven attributes, and empirical research.
In this paper, theoretical system was constructed with reference to the existing literature about the concept, history, and communication capabilities of typography, and background of the formation and expression characteristics in non-verbal typography; communicational elements of the typography in print media advertising was discussed for the representation of linguistic function and non-verbal (figurative) function. In the second step, the non-verbal type of typography in print media advertising classified into three categories: (1) product (image) + nonverbal typography, (2) non-verbal typography, and (3) linguistic typography + nonverbal typography; and various cases were analyzed for this study centered on AIDMA theory described in terms communication of advertising, and 7 conditions of advertising: visual attention, differentiation (originality) of representation techniques, advertising message communicability, aesthetic formativeness, interest, suitability, and memory. In addition, the hypothesis has been verified by a survey of 150 people with a variety of ages.
Through these analyses, the present paper revealed that image shaped non-verbal typography in the print media advertising excels in formativeness and visual attention, and that the non-verbal typography used with the product (image) is excellent in message communicability than typography with readability. The analysis further shows that the nonverbal typography in advertising gives freshness by showing the image outside the framework of the print we used to see, and plays a sufficient role to attract the interests of consumers at the same time.
A comprehensive look at the overall results gives the conclusion that the non-verbal characteristics of typography are all associated respectively; and that the efficiency of the communication is maximized through the synergy effect when expressed in combination with each other in harmony.
This study has limitations in that subjectivity cannot be completely ruled out due to the arbitrary judgment of the analyst, for it is the difficult part to determine the advertising type of existing advertisements by perfect objective criteria, so care should be taken through the analysis of well-made common print media advertising practices.
This paper was intended to secure theoretical rationale for the development of typographic design through the characteristics and usability of the typography by an intensified research of the nature of non-verbal of typography, a visual communication that fits in the current era, only in print media advertising. It is expected that this study can be a small help in developing effective creativity of visual typography in the future advertising design.
