With the development of the Korean film market and the Korean theater, the form as well as the content of Korean movies is changing in a way. Melodrama occupies the larger share of the film market in Korea, which has the most sustainability within the Genre Film of Korea. After the 1990s, Korean melodrama is usually combined with comedy to develop into the romantic comedy. Moreover, since the 1990s, the romantic comedy had been obtaining a high popularity across the country. Especially after the year2000, leading by "My Sassy Girl" directed by Jae-young Kwak, a new image of women came on stage in romantic comedy. This "sassy girl" role, which gained a satisfying box office as well as a fantastic fame, has attracted the attention of feminists as a fresh women style.
The director Jae-young Kwak produced three other works after "My Sassy Girl", including "The Classic" (2003), "Windstruck" (2004), and “My Mighty Princess" (2008). Among these films, as the romantic comedies, "My Sassy Girl" and "Windstruck" (2004), "My Mighty Princess" (2008) created similar images of heroine while "The Classic" made another kind of heroine image. This essay seeks to uncover feminist stance within Jae-young Kwak’s works from the perspective of genre films and feminism film theory.
Researching on the heroines of three romantic comedies above-mentioned, we could found a distinct contrast between their strong character and the tears hidden behind. They are in an active position, however, the heroines were only able to confirm their own subjectivity through the heroes. In contrast to Jae-young Kwak’s film, the actresses who are the supporting roles could show off their distinct subjectivity escaped from the patriarchal system.
As a Jae-young Kwak’s unique popular dramas “The Classic” after 2000, although there were some changes, the heroine was always reflecting a compromise in a passive way.
Therefore, Director Jae-young Kwak’s work is rather to reflect the meaning which is how to establish a relatively equal role of women based on the androcentric stance instead of feminism. (I think that) Director Jae-young Kwak’s work is a try of transitional period which attempted to build a truly subversive role of women under the relationship of full equality of men and women. It can be said that the role of women in his work who were struggling to find their own social significance against the patriarchal system goes a great step further than the Korean films in before years.
