Recently, the problem of school violence is being regarded as an important and serious social problem. The main target of the school violence moves from middle school/high school students to elementary school students. However, the biggest problem is that there is a high possibility for them to commit a serious delinquency and a criminal act in their adolescence and adulthood unless there's any early intervention for them. Therefore, the prevention and the countermeasure for school maladjustment and aggressive behavior in their childhood are being sought after, whereupon this research attempts to verify the effect of school adaptation, self-esteem and aggression on the 3rd grade elementary school students with a violence prevention program using a dance/movement psychotherapy.
The target of this research is the 3rd grade, 147 students of B elementary school in Seoul, Korea. Experiment group consists of class 2, 3 and 6, totall 73 students. The control group consists of class 1, 4 and 5, totall 74 students. The violence prevention programs of 5 sessions through dance/movement psychotherapy program have been performed for each class of experiment group from Sep. 27, 2012 to Nov. 01, 2012, during 40 minutes, once a week.
This research, based on 'Violence Prevention Through Movement & Pro-Social Skills' (Cornblum, 2002), has applied one topic to each session as the objective using a violence prevention program through dance/movement psychotherapy program. These 5 topics are Spatial Awareness, Self-Control and Stress Management, Awareness of and Response to Dangerous Situations, Building Empathy and Managing Anger. Each topic consists of the review of main concept & activity in previous session, main activities development and the topic-discussion.
For this research, the juvenile self-reported school adaptation scale, self-esteemed scale, aggression scale and teacher-child rating scale have been applied and the change has been measured using pre- and post-test. In result, it was not achieved a statistically significant result in school adaptation, self-esteem, aggression, however, it was verified in rating by teacher for the violence prevention program through dance/movement psychotherapy program to effect significantly to a whole juvenile school life.
Through the outcome of this research, it was found that the school violence prevention program through dance/movement psychotherapy program affirmatively affects the 3rd grade children of elementary school. For that reason, I would like to suggest that violence prevention program of which body movement approach is emphasized, is to be developed continuously for elementary school students.
