Most university students in Korea usually experience confusion because of various environmental changes after graduating from high school which is comparatively the period of suppression. This study has been carried out to assess the effects of horticultural therapy program using the floral design on their ego-identity, personal relations, and stress.
26 students were recruited from K University in Seoul for the study, and they were separated as control and participative group of 13. Only participative group carried out the horticultural therapy program which offered weekly for 15 weeks from August 31st 2011 to December 17th 2011. The questionnaire survey consisted of ego-identity scale, personal relations scale, and stress scale has been conducted for each group before and after the program. The collected data was analyzed by SPSS WIN Ver. 18.0. Independent t-test was carried out to compare the averages of the participative group and the control group before the program and paired t-test was conducted for a before-and-after comparison of each group. Reliability of research instruments was analyzed by Cronbach’α and general information analysis was expressed in frequency analysis and percentage terms.
There was no significant difference between the groups prior to the program. In ego-identity scale after the program, all six subscale averages of participative group increased and ego-identity was significantly enhanced in five subscales. In personal relations scale after the program, all seven subscale averages of participative group increased and personal relations were significantly improved in two subscales. In stress scale after the program, all three subscales significantly reduced.
This study indicated that the horticultural therapy using the floral design can be applied as a positive method for university students to establish themselves as an adult.
