The essay is a research on the science of He-luo and the Mediality of Iconology. The science of He-luo is all about the discussions on He-tu or Luo-shu. The discussions include as follows: First, it deals with whether He-tu or Luo-shu is the place of origin of the Book of Change; second, it deals with the number of He-tu or Luo-shu, and third, it deals with Tai-ji related to He-tu or Luo-shu. The motive of starting this paper lies in the curiosity about why the discussion was developed through the medium of an icon.
It's compulsory for a human, as a social animal, to have communication with the other. This communication is the two-way process. A constant medium is mobilized here. A medium is so important as to determine the message for delivery in communication. Accordingly, communicators try to use the optimum medium. The premise of this study is that communicators might have adopted an Icon as the optimum medium in the science of He-luo.
The main subject of this paper is the science of He-luo during the Song Dynasty. The Science of He-luo during the Song Dynasty sought the philosophical reason, such as the evolution theory, ontology and ethical belief, etc. through the Icon of He-tu, or Luo-shu, and suggests the results. Here, He-tu or Luo-shu takes charge of the function as a medium. Scholars adopted the Icon of He-tu or Luo-shu as a medium as means of communication.
Through the research, this paper confirmed the meaning, value and modern applicability of the Science of He-luo as follows:
First, the Science of He-luo, which assumes a holistic orderly body idea as an archetype of East Asian thinking, has the meaning and value as the agenda that could give a solution to the problems of destruction of natural ecology and environmental pollution, etc. At the same time, it is confirmed that the Science of He-luo has the possibility of being reborn as a worldwide level of archetypal thinking model beyond the level of the archetype of East Asian thinking in modern society where a sense of crisis over the end of the world is ever spreading.
Second, the forms and numbers of He-tu or Luo-shu in the Science of He-luo assume the medium character of investigating the ontology or human cultivation stage. In addition to this, He-tu or Luo-shu have the Mediality as an Icon by carrying the addressor and addressee. Such Mediality of Iconology is judged to have still high utility value even in modern society. It's possible to study or suggest the abstract content through an Icon, and to have communication with the people in different cultural area more easily through an Icon than through general languages.
Third, the Science of He-luo can be fully used as cultural contents products or goods. This gives birth to the result of using the regional, traditional characteristic of East Asian archetype of thinking as cultural contents. In addition, this could be a momentum for opening the accepting direction for cultural contents of globalization of East Asian regionality, and opening the possibility of its realization.
Through the process as above, this study could confirm the research objective - 'The Mediality of Iconology in the Science of He-luo.' This result confirmed the possibility of the Science of He-luo being used as cultural contents in modern society where a medium is ever gaining weight. In short, the Science of He-luo has communication with the holistic orderly body idea through the medium of forms and numbers, which can be called the archetype of East Asian thinking. It's possible to re-create such a thinking model of the Science of He-luo, or the utilization method of the medium of an Icon into cultural products that can create economic value or to commercialize them as goods through diverse channels by embodying such a thinking model or way to use the medium of an icon after succeeding to them.
