This study is analyzing of bibliographic aspect of Hyupgiltongui which was compiled in King Jeongjo of the late Chosun Dynasty and researching the major principle of contents which are included in that book. Hyupgiltongui was one of the most important book to such an extent as to be adopted an examination subject of the Gwageo examination for selecting government official. But in the Korea of today Myungri science scholars or fortune?tellers do not recognize the value of this book. The reason is that up to now we are not getting ready autochthonic logic of Korean Myungri theory(Myungri science, Feng shui, Calendar etc.), and we depended on Chinese Myungri science immoderately. Therefore we are going to overcome of its limitation through a research of Hyupgiltongui.
In all ages, people come to the subject or the object of choice. There is a difference in method of selection with the times. But essential functions of choice may well be same in all ages.
Peoples who lived in the hunting and fishing period or in the agricultural age, perhaps they would meet with the change of various choice in their own way. In at that time, those decisions were take care of all member in a community or country at national level, not take care of the personal benefit or happiness.
In our country, there was a state organization and public officer of Myungri theory by the record or literature in the Silla, Goryeo, Chosun Dynasty. Myungri and Feng shui theory was called Myunggwa, Yin and yang, Five flements, Geography etc. And it was a nation’s study. King Jeongjo particularly adhered to a Myungri and Feng shui theory as compared with another King did, he personally carried out research on it. Such his concern about Myungri and Feng shui was what causes let vassals and government officials compile Hyupgiltongui. This book is composed of ten volumes, twenty?two chapters and it was made over the years.
In this study, analysed compilation’s process and composition of Hyupgiltongui. And looked through whether the content that it is recorded in this book was quoted from which a source literature, looked narrowly into Myungri and Feng shui theory what are encluded in it. The results of this research shows as follows. First, this book explain generative and changing processes of the apriority?acquired Eight Trigrams for divination what become basic theory of the book of Changes(JuYeok). Second, for reasons of it state the principle of Yin?Yang and Five Elements theory, prepare to appearance of the specialty publication in the Oriental divining art. Third, Hyupgiltongui. go down the list of lucky or bade date of various event are hosted by Royal family or private home. Therefore, it has a sort of encyclopedic function. Fourth, this book appoint a date and location of memorial service or ceremony?event what are held by the central or local government, wherefore it plays a role as a public program. The last, this book clearly delineate about the sunrise or sunset time, for that reason it get status as a Calendar.
However, there are several weaknesses in Hyupgiltongui. Those are like this. In the first Hyupgiltongui’s substance was quoted too much from Hyupkibyeonbangseo, Cheonkidaeyo. On the other hand, it was in small quantity cited from Sanggiltongseo is one of three books what King Jeongjo presented to use as a reference. The second, although the most of lists and content of Hyupgiltongui were quoted from the other books, did not indicate a footnote about the content that it is quoted. The third, the lists and content of this book are not arranged manifestly by cognate species. All the same, a fault of this caliber is marginal mistake, Hyupgiltongui is invaluable book definitely.
And there are several critical points on study of Hyupgiltongui. There were so lots of quantity of in this book, therefore the present writer could not research about all of it in this treatise. This book has been written in Chinese character, whereupon this book is very difficult to translate Chinese into Korean. This writer emphasize that now and for ever we analyze and devote deep study to Hyupgiltongui. In so doing, we will have to contribute to the advancement of our traditional Myungri and Feng shui science and the art of divination.
