The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the training motivation and self-determination of adult taekwondo trainees on their subjective wellbeing in an effort to provide some information on the diversification of taekwondo trainees, since taekwondo trainees are mostly elementary school students.
The subjects in this study were 250 adult taekwondo trainees in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. After a survey was conducted, an exploratory factor analysis was carried out to check the construct validity of the questionnaire used, and maximum likelihood estimation and Oblimin rotation were utilized for each variable. The findings of the study were as follows:
First, as a result of analyzing the influence of the level of taekwondo training on motivation level, self-determination and subjective wellbeing, a stronger external motivation was found among those who underwent training for a larger period of six years or more, and their amotivation and internal motivation were lower and higher respectively. A shorter period of training led to lower internal motivation. In terms of self- determination, the trainees who underwent training for a longer period of time were more excellent in every regard involving autonomy, relationship and competence. Regarding subjective wellbeing, the trainees who underwent training for a longer period of time showed more positive emotion, more life satisfaction and less negative emotion.
Second, as a result of analyzing the links between motivation level and self-determination, amotivation had a negative impact on relationship and competence, and internal motivation exerted a significant influence on relationship and competence and affected autonomy in a significantly positive way. External motivation exercised a significant influence on relationship and competence.
Third, as a result of analyzing the links between self-determination and subjective wellbeing, relationship had a significant positive impact on positive emotion and negative emotion. Competence exerted a significant influence on positive emotion and affected negative emotion and life satisfaction in a significantly positive manner. Therefore it could be concluded that better relationship and better competence lead to lower negative emotion.
The findings of the study might not be generalizable since the geographic scope of it was confined to Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. But the number of adult taekwondo trainees is not large at present, and this study is expected to provide information on how to attract more adult taekwondo trainees under the circumstances.
