The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences in the course of play-centered toilet learning and to analyze the educational meaning of play-centered toilet learning at one year infant class. This study will give educational insight into the caring and rearing of infants.
The research was implemented in the one year class Meoungranghanban, in an infant institution, located in D city. The participants in this study were 5 boys and 5 girls ages 16 months to 26 months (as of March, 2012). The study took place for 9 months, from March to November 2012. From March to April, the focus of the research was placed on forming rapport with infants and from April, participant observation was made for 7 months. Data collection was completed by participant observations, interview with mothers and the teacher. The data was then analyzed for results.
The results of this study are to be reported in two categories. First, the experiences in the course of play-centered toilet learning at one year infant class. Second, the educational meaning of play-centered toilet learning at one year infant class.
In the experiences in the course of play-centered toilet learning at one year infant class, first, in preparatory phase of toilet learning, infants may experience separation while navigating away from familiar diapers into defecation self reliance.
Second, in progress phase of toilet learning, as the infants became more familiar with the toilet through observation, and with familiar navigation, the infants began to separate from diapers to practical knowledge of how to use the toilet.
Third, in regulated phase of toilet learning, infants learn self-help techniques for defecation and better understand toilet space to better recall the learning process of their bowel movements. As a result, proper toilet techniques are learned as well as a sense of accomplishment.
Next, lets discuss the educational meaning of play-centered toilet learning at one year infant class. First, a toddler should become familiar with a strange environment while learning toilet techniques. The second meaning is the toddler will have the opportunity to practice and imitate proper toilet methods. The third meaning is to make a voluntary challenge and stimulating environment in learning proper toilet procedures. The forth meaning will provide the infant with the opportunity to share and communicate with friends and teachers in order to provide a nurturing and supportive environment for positive growth the development. The fifth meaning is infants will get joy and satisfaction in themselves. Finally, caring teachers have to understand to meaning of play-centered toilet learning and supporting the toilet learning process.
