Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the personal, family, and community factors that related to smartphone addiction risk of adolescents. Methods: The participants were 500 students from 4 middle schools, 2 academic high schools, and 2 vocational high schools. Data were obtained from these participants between July 1 and July 30 of 2012 by using self-report questionnaires. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. Results: Of the participants, 79.5% were in the non-risk smartphone addiction group while 20.5% were in the at-risk for smartphone addiction group. The most significant variables related to smartphone addiction risk of adolescents as a result of the multivariate analysis were 3 personal factors (school type, loneliness, and dispositional motivation), 1 family factor (parental attitudes), and 1 community factor (school life satisfaction). Conclusion: These results would indicate that an effective smartphone addiction screening and prevention program for adolescents should consider personal, family, and community factors.
