The purpose of this study was to examine the relations among alexithymia, emotional clarity and somatization in adolescents and to verify if the difficulties in emotional regulation are mediating variables among alexithymia, emotional clarity and somatization. Alexithymia Scale(TAS-20), emotional clarity scale(Trait Mata-Mood Scale : TMMS), difficulties in emotional regulation(Korea-Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale: K-DERS) and Symptom Checklist-90-Revision(SCL-90-R) were administered to 922 middle school students in Gyeongsangbukdo and Busan. The date were analysed using by t-test and multiple regression analysis.
The results of this study were as follows.
First, alexitymia were positively correlated to adolescent's somatization and difficulties in emotional regulation. But, emotional clarity was negatively correlated to adolescent's somatization and difficulties in emotional regulation. In addition, difficulties in emotional regulation was positively correlated to adolescent's somatization.
Second, a significant gender difference were observed in alexitymia, difficulties in emotional regulation and somatization. Female adolescents showed higher scores in alexithymia, difficulties in emotional regulation and somatization than male adolescents. This result indicate that female adolescents have a severe alexithymia, and have a difficulties in emotional regulation and somatization problem than male adolescents have it.
Third, alexitymia has a direct effect on adolescent's somatization. Also, difficulties in emotional regulation have a mediate effect on the relations among alexithymia, emotional clarity and adolescent's somatization. It's means that alexitymia plays a direct role in adolescent's somatization and difficulties in emotional regulation plays an indirect role on it.
The results of this study suggest that alexitymia, emotional clarity and difficulties in emotional regulation might be important factors to consider on adolescent's somatization. The implications and limitations of this study, and suggestions of further research were discussed.
