Unlike the traditional hardware, smartphone has to be designed to input and output with only screen. And many designers are undergoing for this characteristic of smartphone. However there is still lacks of research on developing for smartphone game UI.
A study has been researched each game layout raking 1 through 100 on the game list to be sold at SK T-store in May 2012 as to categorize in depth like 'PC Game Layout Classification System' by Andrew Rollings. As a result, 4 more new layouts are added except 3 of existing layouts by him.
Furthermore, the feature of smartphone platform which provided input and output in a single screen is divided into information display area and gameplay information display area, and these are redivided into control and non-control. With this, 4 areas are as follows: control information display area, non-control information display area, gameplay control information display area, and gameplay non-control information display area.
I extracted contents from each display area in the 100 games, based on them developed SGUAT(Smartphone Game UI Authoring Tool). After that FGI(Focus Group Interview) was tested on 100 smartphone game developer.
As a result, the assessment was positive and demonstrated a high level by 84%. Also SGUAT was applied to actual smartphone game development use and shorten the development period.
