Numerous plants appear in Buddhist scriptures. Of them, Muusu which watched the birth of Buddha, Borisu which watched the enlightenment, and Bonsarasu which watched Nirvana are called the three sacred Buddhist trees. In addition to these three sacred Buddhist trees, this study examines Buddha-related plants such as Yeombusu which watched the first Zen, and Gilsangcho which was the hint of enlightenment, as well as the legends of lotus, the symbol of Buddhist teachings.
The difference in tropical water lily and temperate lily, as well as the usage of various parts of lotus flower were examined.
Udumbara flower, called the incarnation of Buddha, which exists in India, and its Korean version known as Puljamjarial were comparatively examined.
With regard to Buddhist Lineage, this study examined agilawood used in the main hall worship service, tea plant enjoyed by monks, weeping willow used for teeth brushing, and Mansusahwa used for binding scriptures. Regarding the five hot vegetables forbidden by temples, although there is no argument about garlic, green onion, radish and wild chive, the study examined whether or not Heunggeo (a kind of lily) is widely distributed in China an Korea.
Of the five hot vegetables, the study examined why garlic was forbidden while Buddha lived, on the basis of the scriptures.
In conclusion, Buddhism-relate plants were examined. By linking modern-time ecosystems with Buddhist viewpoint of life, the necessity for the cultivation, improvement and preservation of plants appearing in Buddhist scriptures was examined to raise interest in Buddhist plants and promote Buddhist teachings.
Notably, regarding trees called Borisu (bo tree), the wrong distinction between Indian Borisu and Korean Borisu, as well as the wrong definition of Chinese transliteration of Bojesu as recorded in a world encyclopedia were examined. This error was pinpointed.
