Also in elite sports teams, the efficiency of mentors and mentoring system as an effective measure for developing positive attitude, growth, and talented persons out of group members, that is to say players is being proved. However, studies on mentors and mentoring technique are insufficient in the actual situation for personal result and effective result of elite sports teams.
This study utilized grounded theory research methodology unlike existing studies with a view to essential consideration of the effect of mentors and mentoring. Based on this, the purposes of the research as follows are intended to be accomplished.
Firstly, this study explores the world in which players of elite sports teams of universities live so as to materialize the theoretical frame on the basis of their sense of belonging and perception and opinion about the leader.
Secondly, a mentoring plan is to be sought that can help to exercise personal capabilities within elite sports teams of universities on the basis of their internal perception and emotion, as well as the theoretical frame.
Thirdly, latent capabilities of players are to be exercised to the highest degree, and holistic growth of each person is made possible, and the directions for training and players management is to be investigated.
This research purposes were carried out targeting 6 persons of players and leaders who are the members of elite sports teams of universities. Data that had been gained through in-depth interviewing and participant observation based on the grounded theory of Strauss & Corbin (1998) was analyzed and organized into concept, subordinate category, and superordinate category; the relations of these categories were clarified, and the analyzed categories are as follows.
The final ten categories and forty three subordinate categories, and one hundred and twenty seven concepts came out as a result. The causal conditions turned out to be 'feeling pessimistic about being an elite sports player', and the central phenomenon came out to be 'communication between the mentor and the mentee'. Additionally, 'perception about the mentor' and 'attitude toward the mentor' were derived; the mediating condition presented itself as 'motivation for study/interest of the mentor', 'mentor's support of study'. Action/interaction came out to be 'improvement of exercise environment', 'communion with the surroundings', and the result turned out to be 'attainment of goals through the mentor', 'support for the mentor', and 'mentoring effect'.
The relation statements are ones that have been stated by consistently comparing the core category, which resulted from the contextual condition that had emerged out of the process of analyzing source data, and the causal condition, the interaction strategy, the hypothetical relation that can exist in the attributes of the result with the source data. Therefore, the following hypothesis is drawn.
(Hypothesis 1) When the perception about the mentor is positive, communication between the mentor and the mentee will be harmonious, and active attitude will be shown toward the improvement of exercise environment or the communion with the surroundings; hence positive influence will be exerted on the support and effect through mentors.
(Hypothesis 2) When the perception about the mentor is positive, communication between the mentor and the mentee will be half-hearted, and passive attitude will be shown toward the improvement of exercise environment or the communion with the surroundings; hence positive influence will be exerted on the support and effect through mentors.
(Hypothesis 3) When the perception about the mentor is negative, communication between the mentor and the mentee will be harmonious, and active attitude will be shown toward the improvement of exercise environment or the communion with the surroundings; hence positive influence will be exerted on the support and effect through mentors.
(Hypothesis 4) When the perception about the mentor is negative, communication between the mentor and the mentee will be half-hearted, and passive attitude will be shown toward the improvement of exercise environment or the communion with the surroundings; hence positive influence will be exerted on the support and effect through mentors.
(Hypothesis 5) When the perception about the mentor is positive, communication between the mentor and the mentee will be harmonious, and positive attitude will be shown toward the improvement of exercise environment or the communion with the surroundings; hence negative influence will be exerted on the support and effect through mentors.
(Hypothesis 6) When the perception about the mentor is positive, communication between the mentor and the mentee will be half-hearted, and passive attitude will be shown toward the improvement of exercise environment or the communion with the surroundings; hence negative influence will be exerted on the support and effect through mentors.
(Hypothesis 7) When the perception about the mentor is negative, communication between the mentor and the mentee will be harmonious, and positive attitude will be shown toward the improvement of exercise environment or the communion with the surroundings; hence negative influence will be exerted on the support and effect through mentors.
(Hypothesis 8) When the perception about the mentor is negative, communication between the mentor and the mentee will be half-hearted, and passive attitude will be shown toward the improvement of exercise environment or the communion with the surroundings; hence negative influence will be exerted on the support and effect through mentors.
In this study, the relation statements on mentor and mentoring are defined as 'positive/actively promoting type', 'pessimistic/actively promoting type', and 'restrictively seeking type' on the foundation of the process of analyzing the source data.
'Positive/actively promoting type' showed that research participants have less pessimism about being elite sports players, and the understanding as well as the perception and the attitude toward mentors is positive; accordingly, the desire for study and the interest showed itself to be active. 'Pessimistic/actively promoting type' showed that research participants have much pessimism about being elite sports players; however, the understanding as well as the perception and the attitude toward mentors is positive, and the desire for study and the interest turned out to be also active. 'Restrictively seeking type' showed that research participants have much pessimism about being elite sports players; hence, the understanding as well as the perception and the attitude toward mentors is negative, and the desire for study and the interest showed itself to be passive.
