ABSTRACT

An Analysis of Multicultural Educationl Contents
in the Social Studies Textbook
-focused on the 7th and 2007 educational curriculum-

South Korea is fast becoming a multicultural society, but this concept has not yet been fully established within society, particularly in regards to the education system. Due to the changing social climate and the needs inherent in these changes, the national education office has selected curriculum which includes content that focuses on multiculturalism.
In this study the first priority was to distinguish between various terms such as multicultural, multiculturalism, etc. in order to clear up possible ambiguities. The next objective was to compare various high school social studies books, some published before 2007 and the revised editions. The purpose of this comparison was to determine if the material was systematically and rationally laid out.
The results were as follows:
Considering the situation of multicultural education in South Korea, the textbooks lack practical instruction regarding how to adapt to a changing society. There is now more mention of multiculturalism than in the past, but the practical guidelines need improvement.
Teachers must be trained in specialized education programs in order to ensure that educators are aware of multiculturalism. They must also have a respectful attitude towards different cultures. The government needs to initiate this kind of training program for the teachers of South Korea.
Furthermore, minority groups need to be supported for equal opportunities so that in the future they will not be subjected to discriminatory treatment.
