The purpose of this study is to validate an the muticultural Attitude Scale for University students in Korea.
In this study, mlticultural Attitudes is defined internal characteristics that could properly understand the different cultures, care about diverse cultures and consistently cope with in a multicultural society.
Mlticultural Attitude consists of three elements that Cognitive component understanding the existence of discrimination and the difference in a multicultural society, Affective component caring about and accepting different culture with open mind, and Behavioral component acting and seeking practice to eliminate discrimination.
These definitions and distinctions based on a broad multicultural concept which include nation and race as well as sex, socioeconomic status, physical and intellectual abilities, and religion.
The process of this study were as follows:
First, fifty items were collected from translating Multicultural Attitude Scale Questionnaire(MASQUE; Munro, 1996) into korean and gathering related items through domestic literatures review.
Second, classify fifty items into three tentative standards - Cognitive component, Affective component, and Behavioral component-after reviewing and modify the items.
Third, to select the items, structured questionnaire survey of 425 University students from Jeolla province.
The results of this study are summarized as follows:
First, as a result of factor analysis, multicultural attitude scale comes to consist of three factors - 'Recognizing differences'(6 items), 'Openness and Acceptance'(5 items), 'Committment'(5 items). The total is 16 items.
Second, the indices of the modified best fit model on the multicultural attitude scale are good(GFI=.911 CFI=.925, REMSEA=.065).
Third, the concurrent validity was tested by examining the correlation between the newly developed scale and cultural sensitivity scale. The correlation between two scales shows meaningful results.
Fourth, the newly developed scale revealed its adequate internal consistency(Cronbach ⍺ .766 - .789).
Based on the results, some conclusion can be drawn: 1) the best model for multicultural attitude construct consist of three dimension; 2) the multicultural attitude scale developed in this study is reliable and validate instrument.
