This study starts with recognition of three problems. First, users of archives and similar institutions want to have multidisciplinary information services regardless of service providers and types of institutions recently. Responding to this, archives, libraries and museums in Canada and Europe continue the trends to cooperate or provide multidisciplinary services. Second, according to the Public Records Management Act of 2007, local governments need to establish local archives managing institutions, but there is no case of establishment and construction for that. Although museums managed by local governments increase dramatically, in many cases, they are criticized for poor contents. Thus scholars both in archives and museum propose multi-functioning 'local cultural and history centers' as alternative. Last, even though archives are information institutions with specific purposes and functions, professional opinions of archivists have not been reflected in archives construction processes.
This study recognizes this reality and tries to provide systematic methods that achieve professionals could plan spaces for multidisciplinary cultural information institutions, offering various information for users. For this purpose the study gives attention to Larchiveum(Libraries + Archives + Museums) as an alternative institution that provides mutiple information resources, which was proposed by Megan Winget, University of Texas, in 2008. This research studies the methods that achieve professionals could participate in decision making process related to Larchiveum spatial planning. At present, Larchiveum is proposed as a multidisciplinary information service institution that implement multi-functions of archives, libraries and museums. It requires concrete materialization strategy, since it is not practiced in Korea or overseas. Thus this study systematically analyzes information on space elements needed for Larchiveum, proposes the reflection of this on spatial planning process. It recommends that these process elements should be utilized for construction planning as a necessary essential aspects. Spatial planning process pertinent to the functions of Larchiveum is proposed by consulting to museum planning and library‘s architectural programming. For this purpose Larchiveum spatial planning reflects space elements generated from comparative analyses of functional space characteristics for archives, libraries and museums.
Larchiveum spatial planning processes, which this study proposes, involves steps of ‘analyses of functions’, ‘plan for functions', ‘plan for spaces’, and ‘examination of validity’. The phases include : analyses of necessary functional elements for Larchiveum planning after comparing functional elements of archives, libraries, and museums; establishment of multidisciplinary service functions and multidisciplinary organization for Larchiveum; planning for spatial function comprehending necessary space related for works, services and security; and potential spatial plan proposing to planner. Feedback structure is proposed for continuous examination and correction of utilization of spaces after construction of Larchiveum, through evaluation processes for utilization of spaces and progressive validation of planning processes.
This study covers not only facility centered planning design and allocation of spaces for Larchiveum, but also various elements of spatial planning phase for Larchiveum, Such as roles, missions and purposes of Larchiveum construction; needs of major users and service tools; appropriate regulations for facilities and equipments; business functions of organization and work processes; the flow of human and resources traffic; and security management elements.
It is hoped that the results of this study could be utilized not only for spatial planning of Larchiveum or multidisciplinary cultural information institutions, but also for various functional plans for establishment or integration of similar information institutions. This study offers a concrete model for local history cultural centers microscopically, and proposes practical methods of bringing professional functions in various single information institutions macroscopically, that would results in economic and cultural effects responding to global multidisciplinary cultural information trends. It is also hoped, above all, that through this research, professional viewpoints are reflected on construction plans for archives, Larchiveum and similar cultural information institutions in future, and that this study contributes the participation of records management professionals in spatial planning.
