The study is aimed at figuring out the effect of factors affecting participation motivation for youth activities and activity satisfaction, and proposing the most appropriate model that participation motivation and activity satisfaction have an effect on happiness vis resilience. To do so, the study, reflecting precedent studies and activity field, largely divided the impact factors of participation motivation and activity satisfaction into personal internal factor(self-efficacy), activity content factor(personal interest) and activity guidance factor(passion of a leader, respect for choice and autonomy, relationship with a leader). Then, the study set up and verified a research model through a hypothesis about the causal relationship between participation motivation, activity satisfaction, resilience and happiness.
A survey, targeting middle and high school students who participate in youth activities at youth centers, was conducted from March 1, 2012 to April 7, 2012. A total of 425 questionnaires were distributed and 308 out of them have been used for analysis. I made a hierarchical multiple regression analysis between variables to find out the impact factors of participation motivation and activity satisfaction using the SPSS 12.0 program with the collected data. In addition, I conducted structural equation using the AMOS 18.0 to find an appropriate model for relationship between participation motivation, activity satisfaction, resilience and happiness.
The major research findings are as follows.
First of all, as a result of figuring out the effect of factors affecting participation motivation and activity satisfaction, personal interest(β=.37), followed by self-efficacy(β=.27), turned out to have the greatest effect on participation motivation; personal interest(β=.26), followed by relationship with a leader(β=.21), respect for choice and autonomy(β=.20), passion of a leader(β=.18), had the biggest effect on activity satisfaction.
Then, the study respectively verified two models, proposed to explain happiness led by participation motivation and activity satisfaction, as the empirical data, and presented Model II as the most appropriate model. Model II, a channel that participation motivation and activity satisfaction affect happiness through resilience, proved to generally correspond to the goodness of fit indices such as NNFI, CFI, GFI, TLI and RMSEA. Besides, the study looked into χ²Difference Test(Sequential Chi-square Difference Test), PGFI, AIC Index to compare the models, and Model II proved better than Model I. Specifically looking into the channel between variables, the study found that participation motivation for activities had a static effect on activity satisfaction(β=.66) and resilience(β=.55), and that activity satisfaction had such effect on resilience(β=.34). In addition, resilience turned out to affect happiness(β=.68). Meanwhile, activity satisfaction showed a indirect effect between participation motivation and resilience. Resilience showed a indirect effect between happiness and participation motivation, and activity satisfaction.
The study provided theoretical and practical implications based on such research findings. In particular, we need efforts to interest adolescents on the activity field; leaders should ardently guide them, provide an opportunity to choose for them, and guarantee autonomy. Moreover, relationship with a leader should be also considered to bring a positive interaction between adolescents and leaders.
Finally, we should come up with ways to strengthen the motivation of adolescents who take part in activities; we also need special guidance for those with low motivation and cooperation with the surroundings like leaders to encourage their motivation.
