The purpose of this article is to study for the relation of art and imagination as a basic philosophical exploration on the imagination, and it focuses on the area of music education as the realization of musical imagination as time art.
The 21st century is the era of productive imagination enough to highlight the importance of the power of thought. Again, imagination is the driving force that enables creativity. A source of creativity in art will be achieved from a rich imagination. But many people seems to unclear to distinguish exactly the concepts of imagination and creativity and their relationship. However, imagination comes basically from creation. It means that the result of creativity depends on the contents of imagination. In that respect, creativity is a result, the imagination is the process of it. Imagination and creativity are distinctive, but with both of the two features we create art. In order to develop creativity, we need to cultivate rich imagination, and at the same time it is necessary to remove the element that interfere with the free imagination of the performers of art. When a creativity is derived from imagination, the imagination in artistic expression is established through our sense perception.
However, imagination strictly is divided from mere fiction based on personal desire. In addition, imagination that encompasses all of human mental activity is the source of creative thinking as a rational agency of human. This clearly shows substantial reasons of creative imagination, and thus can be applied on the composition activity in musical art. Because composing is action of creating something new as act of artistic creation that requires a musical imagination. Thus, musical imagination plays a key role in composition, performance, listening activity as making something new.
H. Riemann presents the theory of 'listening music', and according to Collingwood, 'listening music' is the experience of overall creativity reconstructed by imagination. In addition, According to Sartre, 'listening music' is activity to produce music by the audiences themselves through the imaginary reduction. Imagination in the creation and interpretation activities and imagination in composition, playing, listening, musical education can be found in the opinion of E. Hanslick. After all, when human nature is in freedom, imagination is an essential tool that enables to realize human nature. Music education must be based on the imagination. Because it can raise the ability to invent a new meaning only through a wide variety of music activities based on imagination.
