Appropriate use of terms of appellation in communication is a very important element that determines the relationship between the speaker and the listener, especially when Korean terms of appellation for relatives are used not only to address relatives but also frequently to call non-family members. This study delves into situations where what terms of appellation for relatives are used to non-family members under what circumstances with what frequency. For this purpose, a survey was carried out on both native and non-native speakers of the Korean language to identify terms of appellation for relatives that are used to non-relatives under certain circumstances.
First, Chapter 1 presents the necessity of this study, reviews various previous studies on terms of appellation for relatives, contemplates on the meaning and limits of such studies, and points out what needs to be improved in the current education on terms of appellation for relatives.
Second, Chapter 2 categorizes the concept and the types of such terms, and looks into the roles appellation terms play in communication based on various theories. This study looks into the characteristics of appellation terms for relatives, and criteria and factors affecting the selection of such terms, laying the foundation for studying such terms of appellation.
Chapter 3 analyzes teaching materials used by universities in Seoul to see how such materials present terms of appellation for relatives used to non-relatives, and points out problems in using terms of appellation for relatives under the current Korean language education circumstance.
Chapter 4 identifies the practice of using terms of appellation for relatives to non-relatives. For this purpose, a survey of appellation terms for relatives used to non-relatives was conducted on Korean native speakers to compare and analyze the result with that of the survey carried out on non-native speakers of Korean.
Both groups answered that considering relationship with them and age, they frequently use terms of appellation for relatives. However, Korean native speakers were shown to heavily use appellation terms for relatives as a whole as opposed to non-native Korean speakers who turned out to have used quite limited choices of such terms as “hyeong/ohbba” (brother), “nuna/eonni” (sister), and “imo” (mother’s sister).
Last, Chapter 5 organizes and summarizes what was reviewed in this study, and presents the meaning and limits of this study.
In the existing Korean education context, terms of appellation for relatives used to non-relatives are included in a dialogue or reading and listening texts. Therefore, teachers as a rule cover such terms in passing, rather than teaching them in separate lecture sessions. However, it is not uncommon for those learning the Korean language to encounter Korean native speakers using terms of appellation for relatives to non-relatives. Under the circumstance, Korean language learners who have a smattering of the language will have to go through a lot of difficulties before actually being able to use such terms. Since frequent use of terms of appellation for relatives to non-relatives is one of the characteristics of the Korean language, and is linked to Korean culture, there is a need to educate those picking up the Korean language about the real usage of such terms actually used by Koreans.
