Today the youth in the twenties is a hot potato socially. It is pity to hear the news around us about young people in the twenties who have grim economic reality. The more miserable thing is that at the moment “we have no solution to their difficult situation”. Thus, we cannot understand their hard situation and encourage them to overcome the difficulties by just saying, “Early training means more than late learning.” For example, some adult often say, “When you are young, you’d better experience many difficulties. I also had many difficulties when I was young. But I overcame them. So you can do it.” Even though I can understand what they say, they don’t consider the present situation at all in which young people in the twenties are experiencing them because the present situation is much different from their experience when they were young. That is, they don’t understand the experience to overcome difficulties of the present young people in the twenties. The present young people in the twenties feel that they cannot overcome these difficulties however hard they try to overcome them. The reason why young people in the twenties are called as those who are in the front lines is that their efforts don’t work at the moment, even though how hard they develop themselves, how well they manage time and their health.
But, in general the saying that society wants them to do and that they listen to carefully is “Don’t make any excuses and have time for self-development.” The noticeable thing here is that this anxious situation remains without improvement even though they try to perform such self-development. Like this, young people in the twenties today are living in the ironical situation trying to overcome a series of crises after admitting the discourse about the self-development. This study starts with this basic critical mind. Why does the young people in the twenties respond positively to the words of consolation, “That’s OK because you are young”? Why on earth is the reason?
Looking it in the macro circumstance, it is related to the fact that modern society is different from individual past life. In the modern society, individual should be self-destructive belabored self who seeks for opportunity according to each situation. The fever of self-development wrapped by costiveness and hope in the modern society is the result of the pressure of the society which wants individual to be. By such social discourse, individual comes to have all the responsibilities. Thus nobody asks about responsibility of the present construct which caused this situation. The surrounding circumstance of the young people in the twenties is similar to that. The people in the twenties see themselves as “the object to be saved” not as the victims of the structure in the social atmosphere focused on only miserable reality. When this situation continues, they have motive of ‘first, survive” instead of “revolution” which asks for the responsibility. It is natural that such people in the twenties who became the object to be saved choose the self-development as the solution to this situation.
This study tried to find out the answer to the question, “Why is the practical theory of the self-development which forces the young people to accept it as their destiny constructed positively and reproduce it? “ based on the field-research for 38 months, targeting the university students in the twenties ‘here now’ through the inductive approaches. This study focused on the process in which ‘here now’ the young people in the twenties who are in the all the contradictive social structures admit (to speak accurately, have to admit) the discourse of self-development voluntarily. I never intend to present their miserable feature in the sympathetic field in order to console them after doing in-depth report of a case. What I captured is the course of self-development of the young people in the twenties which changed to be gloomier in the gloomy Korean society in which winners takes all.
The findings of this study show that ‘now here’ the young people in the twenties choose self-control self-development and that this becomes a chore in their time management of daily life. From this, they form their ‘view’ to look at the world. Thus, they continually don’t agree that non-regular workers ask for regular position. They interpret the different position of the non-regular workers as the area of objective reward problem radically how they spend the same time. They define the present situation as the view of ‘time management’ because they want to ensure their own position.
The characteristic of the people in the twenties who understand the problem of the world like this shows that, in the same age group, they stick to educational credentials surprisingly. They think educational credentials as reasonable desire. They understand and justify the fact that people are treated as their Scholastic Aptitude Test scores. They want to defeat the people who despise them because of the scores. They want to show their high position after entering a famous company not by the college department rank according to the scores of Scholastic Aptitude Test scores. They start to do self-development in order to ensure the spec for job, dreaming that they will be high position. Thus they do self-control. They control themselves rigidly in order to “stick to their own position absolutely” feeling threatened after looking at their features. In the end, the self-control is enforced and thereby they form their view. They ignore specific better job group in order to escape the temporary situation and don’t discriminate someone as their Scholastic Aptitude Test scores. And they are using actively the time management discourse as clear view without compromising in any time. But eventually they come to be imprisoned in iron cage after repeating the same course holding hostage to their own ‘un-compromisable’ view.
Furthermore, the social ethos that social care should be put in the self-care in the way that they should be patient even though they hurt cannot prevent the young people in the twenties to become monsters in the iron prison. They are forced to admit such iron cage of rationality as their destiny like the soldiers in the front lines. The increasing macroscopic circumstance which forces them to be responsible citizens by themselves relatively is restricted the self-development style to some ‘the do’s that they ought to do’ which the university students in the twenties ‘can do’ microscopically. The young people in the twenties do only self-control self-development, feeling they only have to accept the alternative. ‘Here now’ young people in the twenties are domesticated like this.
