The main purpose of this article is to research practicing method to Ānāpānassati of 40 practicing themes of Samatha practice. As a prerequisite task, we researched the concept and the role of practiced meditation at chapter II and researched & analyzed the relations between samatha and vipassana & between samadhi and sati in each origin of words for correct understanding of samatha practice in chapter III. Through this, we tried the re-establishment of this concept.
When we research the difference between general meditation and practiced meditation, general meditation meaning 'think deeply' in the concept of western meditation can be seemed as various forms like a prayer which consciously desires the desperation of certain wish under religious ceremony while practiced meditation is defined as the practice based on the religious precepts of body and word, in other words, the one to develop & complete Noble Eightfold Path (八正道). Also, in the course of establishing the concept of samatha practice, we researched the relation between samatha and vipassana/samadhi/sati/nimitta at first.
Samatha means the practicing method while has the meaning of 'calmness', 'tranquility', or 'stop' as the result of practice. Vipassana is a practice of general relation to practice for obtaining the wisdom with concentration occurred based on samatha practice and has a practicing principle of 'anupassanā' which 'observes along ~'. And samadhi means the concentrating to one subject as a practical and instrumental method for achieving samatha and its concentrated status. Such concentrating subject is Ānāpāna and when nimitta is formed through sati of Ānāpāna, this leads the change of samadhi within mutual relation together with samadhi making nimitta as a subject of concentration. In other words, nimitta is a subject of concentration leading the change of samadhi which is the core of samatha practice.
Samatha is a large category of practice term in initial Buddhism practice together with vipassana. Samatha means the practice for making the status which the mind is not restless and concentrates completely on one subject, and vipassana is a practice observing the law by the behavior of wisdom which distinguishes & knows well about the law.
At this, in order to make the status which the mind is not restless and concentrates completely on one subject, samadhi which is the core of samatha pracice should be formed. Nimitta takes the role to help to form such samadhi as researched at above.
We have researched before that nimitta is based on the mechanism, the recognition. It's because nimitta is a spiritual image or shape obtained by contacting outer subject via senses. Also, nimitta is formed by the concept and is very conceptual. Like this, we can understand that non-existing & conceptualized expression which is occurred from preliminary samadhi by satiing Ānāpāna, one of 40 selection themes of samatha continuously is nimitta. Finally, such nimitta leads samadhi to 몰립 samadhi and make it to be selected.
When summarizing this again, practicing method and its effect to Ānāpānassati which is a purpose of this article brings the result of practice through following process:
Ānāpāna is the preliminary nimitta which forms preliminary samadhi as a subject of concentration of samatha practice. Ānāpānassati practice means the practice which make mindfulness inhalation and exhalation continuously. By making inhalation and exhalation with preliminary nimitta and satiing to such sensual feeling, preliminary nimitta cause learnt nimitta changed gradually into spiritual image or shape. At that time, samadhi also develops together. Nimitta develops into resembled nimitta in preliminary samadhi and develops samadhi into approaching & 몰립 samadhi. Finally, the force of concentration which gathers the minds based on nimitta is used to bring the stage of samadhi. Samatha Ānāpānassati practice is a practice taking nimitta which is a unchangeable expression included not to law but to concept in changing subject of sense of breath and concentrating on such nimitta. This means the most basic method to form samadhi which is a core of samatha practice by causing nimitta from the subject of breath and concentrating the mind on nimitta.
Like this, samatha Ānāpānassati practice obtains the stability of 'calmness of mind' by being immersed in the status of determination for each stage of samadhi forming nimitta through consecutive concentration and taking of sati by concentrating only on breath.
As a result, samatha practice is a preceding practice to make the status which makes the mind not to be restless and concentrates completely on one subject, make the distinguishment to the law, and make the basis for good vipassana practice in relevant to the law with the behavior of wisdom.
